A local picture framer recently swapped making frames to become the subject in the frame for a new photography exhibition. Steve Valentine, Owner of e Frame Shop in Hythe, was approached by Hythe resident and member of e Phorum Photography Group, Tony Chapman, to have his photograph taken for a new exhibition at Southampton City Art Gallery. e exhibition: ‘Denizens, Friendship, Relationship, Citizenship’ features portraits of people associated with e Phorummembers, in their local area, re ecting the National Portrait Gallery’s Project; Creative Connections, which is due to open at Southampton City Art Gallery on 26th May. Over the years Tony has had many of his photographs expertly framed by Steve and as a local resident, Tony asked Steve if he could photograph him for his entry into the exhibition. Tony comments: “Steve had kindly allowed me to ‘borrow’ a gilt frame for a portrait session and in the course of the conversation to say thank you, I mentioned the forthcoming exhibition. Steve was most interested and agreed to be a ‘model’ against the background of the many sample frame ticked all the boxes of being local to Southampton, was a wellknown individual and was also most photogenic (!).” e photo will be on display in the Denizens, Friendship, Relationship, Citizenship Exhibition, in the Foyer Exhibition Space at Southampton Art Gallery, until 24th June.
