Our long-running assisted needs educational programme has given local students the confidence to develop practical and social skills using the farm as a facilitator. During 2012, we installed a Changing Places unit with adult-sized equipment, which gives those that need the facility the dignity and privacy that we all enjoy. However, it is the latest edition of the all-inclusive play equipment that gives us the greatest pleasure – the sight of the happy, laughing faces enjoying the wheelchair swing is simply priceless.” During the opening ceremony, Bryan and Dawn announced that the accessible play area has been dedicated to the memory of Sam Burnage – a very special little boy who loved to visit the Farm. e addition of the all-inclusive play area is a direct result of the vision, planning and hard physical gra from directors Phil Lovelock and Matt Harris of Apex Outdoor Spaces who, with the help of their team, along with Pete and John Gulliver who constructed the accessible perimeter path, and the team from Hunts agricultural contractors, created this happy space. Director of Apex Outdoor Spaces, Phil Lovelock said: “Matt and I were delighted to work on such an important project. It has been challenging at times, and the extreme weather held us up, but we delivered the finished area just inside our given deadline. It’s so rewarding to see the happiness that this project has created.” e all-inclusive play area is available to visitors of Longdown Activity Farm as part of a family-friendly outing which, along with play, o ers a schedule of hands-on animal activities throughout the day. improvements to the wonderful play opportunities available for visitors of all abilities that visit Longdown. Aaron Phipps MBE is a British wheelchair rugby champion, winning a coveted gold medal, along with his teammates, at the 2020 summer Paralympics. Despite being struck down with meningitis C and meningococcal sepsis at the age of 15 resulting in the loss of his legs and most of his ngers, Aaron has gone on to achieve incredible feats of endurance including an unassisted climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2016. I am amazed by the inclusivity that Bryan and Dawn have managed to achieve at Longdown, as a farm is not a venue often associated with accessibility.” A long-term champion of the assisted needs community, Longdown Activity Farm owner Bryan Pass explains: “My wife, Dawn, and I are Music Making & Sharing Music Making and Sharing takes place on the 3rd Saturday of the month (15th July) from 2pm to 5pm at Calmore Village Hall, Pauletts Lane, Calmore SO40 2RS. e cost is just £5 payable at the door. e group welcome and encourage you to share and listen to people’s musical enthusiasm – the instrument of their choice and the genre they like. All levels of ability welcome from professionals to beginners. Anybody can join who would like to play/sing a couple of pieces to non-judgemental fellow musicians. Perhaps you compose your own music. ey would love to hear it. eir meetings start with a brief musical warm-up and then they take turns in playing and listening to each other. ey welcome adults, young people from age 16 years and supervised children.
