Celebrating its 230th anniversary year, Houghton Lodge is a Grade II listed “Cottage Orné” surrounded by mature trees and lawns sweeping down to the banks of the famous River Test, arguably one of the joinery of the beautiful Torii Arch, Moon Gate and Nikko Bridge, as well as new water-loving marginal plants growing on the banks of the pond and island, and a moss garden on the bank of the stream. e Moon Gate provides a doorway between the new oriental garden and the old eighteenth century garden leading visitors to the new acer walk. Elsewhere in the gardens there is lots to see, from the walled garden with its heritage orchard (including the longest espaliered pear tree in the world!), vegetable, cutting, scented, hosta, iris beds and herb garden. Stunning peonies, roses and clematis grow along the central arch. ere are magni cent herbaceous borders, the formal peacock garden, meadow walks by the River Test where you can see the alpacas and a little ock of Hebridean sheep, as well as a woodland trail leading to the grotto. Tours of the 18th century historic house are available on a regular basis and a new guidebook for the house and gardens is now available, produced to coincide with the 230th anniversary. In the new Oriental Garden visitors can explore its cherry orchard, rose garden, and enjoy the exquisite New Card Designs on Sale Supporting Barry’s Farm Local Artist Christine Jones has been busy painting two new card designs for Barry’s Farm. ‘No Ducks Today’ features the infamous Maggie pig taking a sneaky dip in the temporary duck pond last summer. Maggie sadly passed away last year but will always be remembered for her mischievous nature. Alpacas Fudge and Prince are the subject of Christine’s other card ‘Barry’s Animals’.
