At a ceremony on 16th March, in RNLI tradition Mark Radcli e, the son of David Radcli e, who the boat is named a er, handed the boat over to Jamie Chestnutt, RNLI Director of Engineering and Supply, who in turn then handed it over to Jane Banting, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Calshot RNLI. Barry James, the Station Chaplain then led the service of dedication, and the boat was o cially named by Mark along with David’s Grandchildren, before one of Calshot’s helms, Damien Lester gave a vote of thanks. Music was provided by the New Forest Brass Band and along with the Radcli e family, representatives from Lymington and Bembridge RNLI and Hamble Independent Lifeboat were in attendance. A commemorative cake had been made by volunteer crew member Mike Church which was cut by Davids’s daughter Danielle. Once the ceremony was complete, Calshot RNLI volunteer helms, Graham Burgess, Andy Headley and Damien Lester took the newly christened lifeboat to the water to showcase her capabilities to the watching audience. Jane Banting comments: “It was a wonderful occasion, we were delighted to meet the Radcliffe family who have so generously donated our new D Class. We look forward to honouring David’s legacy as our volunteers continue to save lives at sea as we have done throughout the 54 years we’ve been operating here at Calshot.” Just 24 hours a er the o cial naming ceremony, David Radcli e was called into action twice in the space of under an hour, rstly paged to a broken down vessel, before being tasked to a second whilst recovering to shore from the rst shout. Process Team members Emma Mumford, Adam Smith and Gary Algar are colleagues at ExxonMobil Fawley. Spurred on by ExxonMobil Fawley’s pledge to donate £2,000 towards their cause, they decided to take on the 5,896m feat to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, two charities close to their heart. “The two charities hold special significance for us” said Emma. “Both myself and Adam have Ulcerative Colitis, a chronic condition that causes inflammation of the digestive tract. I am also a breast cancer survivor, and both Adam and Gary have had family members affected by cancer, so it felt right to raise money for both charities that are equally important to us all.” With a dedicated training regime under their belts, the trio headed to Africa. Joining a team of six, plus four porters, one cook and two guides, the colleagues embarked on the gruelling six-day climb. Facing altitude challenges and treacherous hikes, as well as Emma needing to carefully manage her ared Ulcerative Colitis symptoms, the group reached the summit, Uhuru Peak at 7am - just in time to witness a memorable sunrise and panoramic views. Adam said: “Nearing our final ascent to Uhuru Peak, we reached the Kibo crater rim at 3am and saw the full moon. That was the moment that made me think, ‘we made it’. Less than 1.5 miles later, we hit the summit, a truly unforgettable experience which made all our hard work worth it.” Since returning, the three friends are already considering more climbs, with both Adam and Emma contemplating Everest Base Camp in Nepal as a future challenge. Emma has also set her sights on walking the Welsh coastal path – a total of 870 miles. Gary, a father of two, is planning his next adventure to be a little closer to home and would like to tackle Wales’s highest mountain, Mount Snowdon, with his sons. “The perspective I’ve gained is immeasurable,” said Gary. “It’s not just about conquering mountains but about the lessons we impart to the next generation.” For more information on ExxonMobil Fawley please visit: www.exxonmobil. co.uk/fawley The courageous trio

Cyclocruze was started in the 1980’s by a group of local ‘dwellers’ of the Lord Nelson pub in Hythe, originally to raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind. e group of cyclists caught the Hythe Ferry with their bikes one Saturday morning to catch the Red Funnel ferry over to Cowes and cycle around the Isle of Wight over two days, with the rst leg taking them from Cowes to St Helen’s, where they stayed in the village hall overnight. e group then rode the remaining part of the island, returning to Cowes and then cycling back to Hythe as there wasn’t a Ferry service on a Sunday back then! In their rst year they raised an amazing £3,500 and had so much fun that they decided to repeat the ride the following year, raising £8,000, and have kept up the annual bike rides ever since! Over the years Cyclocruze riders have raised in excess of £250,000 for charity with money going to charities including Jubilee Sailing Trust, Solent Mind, and Oakhaven Hospice. e 2024 ride will raise funds for HASAG, a charity dedicated to supporting those a ected by mesothelioma, asbestosis or any other asbestosrelated disease throughout the South of England. is charity was chosen in memory of one of Cyclocruze’s most dedicated riders, Steve Phillips, who passed away from mesothelioma last summer. Asian Hornets are an incredibly destructive invasive species that specialise in preying on honeybee hives - one Asian Hornet alone can kill 30-60 honeybees per day. First discovered in the UK in 2016, the insect has travelled to our shores from northern Europe, where there are now over half a million nests annually in France alone. By 2022, just 16 Asian Hornet nests had been discovered in this country. But in 2023, this increased dramatically to 72 nests in 56 di erent locations, with Kent and the South East most predominantly a ected. But there have been sightings in many other locations, including as far north as Scotland, and a credible sighting already reported in January this year, sparking fears the non-native insect may become established in the UK. Last September 3 nests were located and destroyed on the Waterside so increased vigilance is needed in the local area. We are on the front line of this ght to stop this invasive insect gaining a permanent foothold in our Country. Please report any sightings through the ‘Asian Hornet Watch’ app or online: www.bit.ly/ asianhornetreport Experts are keen to point out that this is not just a problem for beekeepers, but poses a signi cant risk to public health. Asian Hornets are aggressively defensive of their nests, which are o en built in hedgerows and brambles, meaning disturbances by unsuspecting individuals could have dangerous consequences. is defensive behaviour could a ect anyone working near a nest, gardeners, allotment owners, dog walkers, farm workers, horse riders and many others. An Asian Hornet can be identi ed by its very distinct markings - they’re a similar size to a European Hornet, which is two or three times the size of a common wasp, and are black with distinct yellow lower leg. Once a sighting is reported via the app or online form, expert teams from the National Bee Unit, part of Defra, will be deployed to track hornets back to their nests, which are then destroyed. Reporting a possible sighting of an Asian Hornet is quick, free, and easy and has the potential to make a huge di erence in the ght against this invasive species. Hythe Shed (at the Pier) Builds New Storage for Waterside Craft Club From Waterside Craft Club Waterside Cra club is a wonderful warm and welcoming oasis of creativity on an otherwise dull ursday a ernoon. Its aim is to provide a safe and welcoming space for creative adults of all abilities to come together to imagine, design, create and learn from each other. e club operates in some form every week of the year for those who enjoy the consistent support and warmth of friendship. We have a creative committee who plan and lead the activity sessions with support from members on the day who are familiar with the chosen topic. Over the two years since the club’s inception, we have accumulated many exciting cra items from paper and paint to sewing machines which were stored in committee members’ homes. e Sea Scout Hut on Shore Road, where we meet every ursday a ernoon, kindly gave us space for storage. However, we needed to raise funds to enable the cupboard to be built. We were kindly supported by donations from the following groups in Hythe community: Hythe Shed (At the Pier), Cllr. Malcolm Wade, e Scratch Project, Waterside Women, Sea Scouts and Waterside Cra Club members. Members of Hythe Shed (at the Pier) spent three weeks building and painting our shared cupboard space and we and the Sea Scouts are thrilled with the build. We can nally store our supplies on site. We welcome new members of all abilities from seasoned cra ers to those just starting out - on Thursday afternoons 12.45pm to 3pm. Sessions are pay as you go and depending on the activity the cost can range from £3 per session to £5 per session to participate. If you would like to bring your own cra and be social it’s only £2. Refreshments are included for both options. Come and join us, make new friends and have fun!
