20th June 2024 • The HERALD • Page 35 v SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE HERALD v UPDATE FROM WATERSIDE CLIMATE ACTION NETWORK (WATERCAN) Sadly, a family bereavement meant we had to rearrange Ben Webster’s 17th June presentation. Fortunately, Dr Shaun Russell, a retired local botanist who formerly directed a Welsh Government research unit advising on environment and sustainability issues including ‘green infrastructure’, was able to step into the breach. His talk covered the design, construction and pros and cons of green roofs and walls. A provisional booking has been made for Southern Water to join us on 15th July, 7pm, venue TBC. Please check the WaterCAN website/Facebook for up to date information. A local correspondent, who has been keeping records of rainfall in his garden since 1991 reports that this was the wettest winter he has recorded since then. Analysis by scientists at the World Weather Attribution Group suggest this was made more likely by global warming, as warmer air holds more water vapour. On a more positive note, and falling rmly into the “It’s an ill wind...” category, data compiled by Imperial College London showed that for the rst time wind has provided more electricity than gas over the last 12 months. Blustery weather and massive new o shore wind farms, including Dogger Bank A in the North Sea, gave wind the competitive edge. Continuing on the good news front, WaterCAN has joined with other like-minded organisations across the Forest to form New Forest Community Energy (NFCE), in partnership with Community Energy South and NFDC, to progress projects across the New Forest area. On a similar theme, New Forest Transition CIC has received funding from NFDC, CES and the Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund to enable their newly formed Home Energy Advice Team to deliver energy saving advice across the Forest. More information in future issues. Finally, however tired you may be by now of election coverage, please remember to vote on 4th July. It’s only a couple of weeks since we celebrated the 80th anniversary of D Day, and one might argue that ensuring we had the right to vote was one of their most important achievements. It is a great way to meet neighbours and to participate in community events. You’ll find them in the Langley Tavern Conservatory so do please go and join them. eir second community project has been to clear the foot path from the corner of West Common along Lepe Road, past the bus stop and as far as the houses. e foot path was over grown with bushes reducing the amount of pavement to next to nothing. It took two sessions to cut the shrubs back and brush up the copious amount of leaf mould that had accumulated to reveal the pavement once more. Langley Hub has a stall at the Fawley Armed Forces Day Event, featuring the Fawley Show, at Gang Warily, on Saturday 22nd June starting at 11am. ey look forward to meeting you there.
