Respecting nature and not picking any rare or protected plants or owers, we can make beautiful hand tied arrangements for ourselves, or as a gi . By holding and arranging owers and foliage in one hand we can create a beautiful, natural display ready for a vase. Once in the vase the twine can be cut and the owers relax into shape, or they can remain tied – just trim the stems for a stable arrangement. ey make perfect gi s and can be transported in a jam jar/charity shop vase with water and ower food ready to enjoy. Firstly, select your chosen owers and foliage (remember some hedgerow plants are poisonous). You will need a minimum of four di erent owers – taller, slimmer owers to give height and width (line owers); feature owers (form) for focal points and colour; owers with multiple heads on a stem for volume (mass owers) and smaller owers ( ller owers) to provide support for the focal owers. Dried and fresh owers may be used together if wished. METHOD: 1. Prepare foliage and owers into bundles in a row, in order to reach easily. Remove all leaves from 1/3 of the way down the stem. Cut a length of twine, or orists paper covered wire, in readiness to tie the bunch. 2. Start with a ower selected for height, hold roughly halfway up and gradually add stems next to each other rotating the developing bunch. 3. Add owers and foliage by using the di erent types to achieve the design that you want, choosing from line, form, mass and ller owers; punctuating with a variety of foliage. 4. Once nished, tie around where you were holding and trim the stems so they are level. en place in freshwater with ower food. of July not 4th of July: Demonstration – ‘Bright Ideas’ by Jill Homer.
