Fine weather and other events in the area encouraged people out. Well over a hundred people each day went to see the progress made in developing the Heritage Centre into a study centre. Visitors enjoyed a rolling slide show of historic photographs of the Waterside as well as static displays showing the old Railway Station, the bomb damage at All Saint’s Church (together with an illuminated fragment of the old stained glass from the church), Football on the Mud, as well as historic views of Marchwood and Fawley. A highlight this year was an interactive screen display of maps interspersed with aerial photographs of the same area. e marvels of modern technology allowed zoom views of selected parts of the maps. ere was also a display arranged by one of the volunteers, Bryan Norman, of a large scale map of the old Hollybank Golf Course. Visitors were shown the progress the Centre is making in digitising their archives. Another highlight was when one of their Life Members, Sir Julian Lewis MP, took a break from canvassing to spend an hour chatting to the volunteers. Several new members signed up at the weekend and took advantage of the o ers available on the books. In addition, several individuals have o ered their services as volunteers. However, with the holiday season now upon us, they may not be able to continue to open from 10am – 12noon on all Tuesdays, ursdays and Saturdays, so if you want to visit to see what the Centre is doing and help with your research into house or family, Tuesdays will be the best bet until the holiday season is over. Please note that the Annual General Meeting of Waterside Heritage will be on Thursday 1st August, 7.30 pm at the Community Centre, Brinton Lane, Hythe. e meeting will be followed by a talk from the popular speaker, Marc Heighway who will speak on the Waterside at war. is is free to members but a charge of £3 will be made for any visitors.
