In 1984 a committee of local groups put together the first Blackfield Horticultural & Cra Show, 40 years later the show is still going strong. e rst show took place in the community centre in Blackfield, moving to the Scout and Guide Hut at Gang Warily for many years before moving to Jubilee Hall in Fawley. e committee really wanted to take the show back to Black eld and thanks to the Royal British Legion the show has been able to return to the village. is year’s Black eld Horticultural & Cra Show will take place on Saturday 10th August at the Royal British Legion and promises to be a bigger show with lots of classes in vegetables, owers, plants, fruit, oral art, cookery, photography, handicra s and children’s classes with cups and trophies to be won, supported by local groups and people, including: • Mervyn Francis Novice Plate, awarded for something grown by a child • Sam Kitcher Cup, awarded for best vegetable • Allotment Association Shield, awarded for most points in the vegetable section • George Aldridge Cup, award to the runner up in the vegetable section • Roger Randall Jubilee Cup, awarded for the best cut ower • Black eld Gardening Club Challenge Cup, awarded for most points in the vegetable, fruit, ower and plant sections • Waterside Flower Club Cup, awarded for most points in the Floral Art section • Country Store Cookery Cup, awarded for most points in the cookery section • Langley W.I. On the 2nd they held their annual Summer a ernoon tea in a members garden. ere was a ra e, tombola and plenty of sandwiches and delicious cakes including scones with jam and cream. Members had the chance to make buttonholes which proved popular. A lovely social occasion thoroughly enjoyed by all those attending. anks must go to the committee for their hard work. On 11th July at their usual club venue they welcomed their speaker Jill Pelton with her talk entitled ‘In the 20’s and 30’s’. With posters to illustrate the various topics it was an interesting journey through the years. Mentioning that some women were granted the vote in 1918 but it wasn’t until 1928 that all women were eligible. Social history proved informative and is relevant to our lives in 2024. ey heard about the garden designers of the time such as Vita Sackville West and Gertrude Jekyll. As a Flower Club they of course had to hear the story of Constance Spry. An entertaining talk and they thank Jill for a lovely evening. Their next meeting is on 12th September when they have a ‘Watch and Do’. A fun evening when they have a design assembled for them to copy. Everything needed is provided by the club at a cost of £7. Although they are given the same items it is amazing how di erent they can be. ey meet at Hythe and Dibden Parish Hall on the 2nd Thursday of the month except August. 6.45pm for 7.30pm and visitors are always warmly welcomed. Meetings take place on the third Thursday of the month at Copythorne Parish Hall, Pollards Moor Road, Copythorne SO40 2NW at 7.30pm. New members and visitors are always welcome. Visitors fee applies.
