Maggie Blake wanted to set herself a challenge to raise money for charity to mark her 90th Birthday in September, originally hoping to do an abseil down the Spinnaker Tower, Maggie has now opted for walking horizontally, rather than vertically, walking a length of Hythe Pier for every year. Maggie will be raising money along the way for the Hythe Pier Heritage Association and the work of the volunteers at Hythe Men’s shed (at the Pier) restoring the Pier train. She started walking in July and has already had a number of donations given to her as she’s been treading the boards of the 640m Pier. Maggie has been overwhelmed by the support she has received so far, from people of all ages including young teenagers that have given her donations. Maggie is hoping to complete her 90th walk by the 15th September, a day before her 90th Birthday. Bob Fells and his wife Stella toasted their 70th wedding anniversary in July at Care UK’s Carpathia Grange, on Southampton Road. When asked the secret to their longlasting marriage, the couple responded with “Unwavering loyalty to our vows”. At the tender age of 17 and 16, Bob and Stella started their lives together a er meeting at a cricket match. Stella said: “Bob wasn’t the best at batting, so I stepped in to assist. It wasn’t love at first sight but love blossomed.” e pair were married at Richmond Worth on 3rd July, 1954, and later welcomed twin daughters and one son into the world. ey now have ve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Stella re ected on how she thinks traditional roles played a large part in allowing their marriage to stand the test of time. She said: “Bob worked outside the home while I cared for our children and this arrangement worked very well for us. It’s always been important to have shared responsibilities, mutual goals and aligned views in our journey together.” Stella fondly remembered being the keeper of the couple’s front door key, symbolising her role as the heart of the home. When asked why she married Bob, she added: “It seemed like a good idea at the time.” Meanwhile, former engineer Bob explained how the childhood experience of his parents separating when he was just seven deeply in uenced his determination to make his own marriage succeed. He said: “It is important to be tolerant and have a commitment to working through challenges together. We have unwavering loyalty to our marriage vows, which is especially vital in an era Bob and Stella surrounded by loved ones on their 70th anniversary when long-term marriages are becoming less common.” To celebrate the special milestone, the team at Carpathia Grange decorated the home’s lounge with balloons and banners. e couple were surrounded by loved ones as they reminisced on happy memories and enjoyed a delicious cake created by the home’s Head Chef. Pooja Dhoot, Home Manager at Carpathia Grange, said: “We were honoured to be a part of such a special moment for Bob and Stella. They are a wonderful couple, with lots of wisdom about building a strong and successful marriage that I think we could all learn from. We regularly celebrate big anniversaries and understand the importance of maintaining relationships and marking life’s milestones. The atmosphere in the home was wonderful and prompted many residents to reminisce and share fond memories of their own weddings. Happy Anniversary, Bob and Stella!” Carpathia Grange is a three-storey care home which provides residential, dementia and nursing care. e home features 62 en-suite bedrooms and has been designed to enable its residents to live active and ful lled lives, while also promoting independence. e care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
