NCI began at a tiny ex Coastguard Station positioned on e Lizard, near Helston in Cornwall. e Coastguard cover had been withdrawn and centralised some time earlier, leaving a disused base. Two local shermen unfortunately lost their lives, and local folk asked if they could use the building, and keep a lookout, and this was the beginning of the NCI, now known as ‘Eyes Along e Coast’. From these humble beginnings, the group has now grown to over 60 Stations, with an amazing volunteer force of approximately 3000. e group is truly made up of volunteers who are not given funding. e ag reached NCI Stone Point, the Station at Lepe Country Park, arriving by vintage Fire Engine, from the NCI Station at Hengistbury Head. e next day, it was taken by two lovely vintage vehicles, Monty a 1959 2 door Morris Minor saloon, and Ethel, a 1970 Morris Traveller, to Calshot Spit, where the ag uttered to adorn the tall NCI Calshot Tower. e following day, it was on its way to Lee-on-the-Solent NCI Station, this time on the Hamble Independent Lifeboat, accompanied by Calshot Station Manager Bryan Young. Here it was handed over to continue the journey around the coast. New volunteers are always welcome at the Stations, and training is given to those who wish to become watchkeepers. e commitment that is requested is a small one of just an average of three shi s monthly, although many Watchkeepers cover more than this. Perhaps attracted by the view from the Calshot Tower station, which has now been open for 15 years, volunteers travel for many miles to carry out watches. Some even come from north of the M4 which shows real commitment. ere is no upper age limit, if you feel that you wish to know more contact: diana.roblett@nci. org.uk e next Lady Cynthia’s Flea Markets will be held on Sunday 6th October and Sunday 3rd November, 10am-4pm, in Lyndhurst Community Centre. ere will be baskets and hampers, handmade knitted toys, bric-abrac, jewellery, antiques, tombola, plants and much more! We were welcomed aboard the ‘Waterside Coach’ by our good friend and driver for the day Howard. Everyone was excited and eagerly looking forward to a great day out with friends. ankfully it wasn’t raining, so we were able to enjoy our picnics sitting on the green by the side of the canal; sandwiches, sausage rolls, strawberries, cakes and treats being swapped and shared amongst friends. We had two narrowboats, e John Pinkerton 11 and Dawn. As soon as the canal boat men had got us aboard and settled, they gave us a brief history of the canal and we were soon sailing along the tranquil stretch of water enjoying refreshments and the odd glass of wine. We sailed along up to the ruins of Odiham Castle, locally known as ‘King John’s Castle’ which was a frequent stopping point for Norman Kings built around 1200. We were able to go out onto the front of the narrowboats and take videos and photos of the lush vegetation growing along the canal banks and tow path. Herons, Mallards, Swans and Dragon ies are regularly seen along the canal, and some of us were lucky enough to spot a few of them, and we were keeping our eyes peeled for a glimpse of a Kingfisher that sometimes appears as a ash of blue ying ahead of the boats. Although we headed o to ‘Newlands Farm Shop’ Café where we were made really welcome and tucked into a delicious cream tea. Everyone had a brilliant day and we want to say a huge thank you to the committee of the ‘Waterside Community Fund’ and also to Malcolm Wade for making this enjoyable day out possible. THANK YOU! Waterside Gateway Club enjoying a wonderful day out on the Basingstoke Canal didn’t see any sh, we did come across several people in kayaks and canoes along the canal, and we gave them ‘high ves’; as they paddled alongside us! A er our pleasant, enjoyable experience on the narrow boats, we thanked the friendly volunteers and crew and Print & Stitch Monday 7th October, create a decorative piece of work of your own design at Lepe Country Park, combining contact/nature printing, lino stamps, frottage, Indian ink drawing and stitch on to a material base. Page 16 • The HERALD • 3rd October 2024 v SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESSES v WATERSIDE NETWORK GROUP: MEMBER FOCUS by Allan Pollock Homeopathic Medicine has a long heritage not only in the UK but across the globe. Its popularity waned through the latter part of the twentieth century with the undeniable advances of modern western medicine which follows a biochemical model. However, for all its successes this model is o en limited to symptom management through the long-term use of medication. In contrast, Homeopathy follows a bioenergetic model sharing common ground with such as acupuncture, Reiki and other traditional healing approaches. Whilst many of these are of eastern origin, the principles and practice of Classical Homeopathy were established in Germany by Dr Samuel Hahnemann in the early years of the 19th century. Most of the large cities in Britain and the USA once had Homeopathic hospitals. What is now deemed alternative was once orthodox and vice-versa. By analogy modern medicine is a war against disease (hence the prefix anti- in many drug groups). In contrast Homeopathy perceives disease as a disharmony; a body out of tune with its environment. Homeopathic medicines seek to reestablish harmony. eir ultra-dilute nature is the cause of some amusement in those who are blind to medicine in other than material doses. Yet we live in an information age, where our daily lives are dominated by nonmaterial flows of data to our phones and more. Consider, then, Homeopathic medicines as an information download to the organism stimulate cure. at ‘like cures like’ is fundamental in Homeopathy. e characteristics of selected medicine should match the symptoms of the patient. For example, Allium Cepa (onion) as a homeopathic potentised medicine is useful in hay fever. Next time you chop an onion you will understand why! e goal of homeopathic treatment is to maximise the innate capacity for healing, emotionally and physically; surely a good place to start. Kimbridge Barn, which held the title of “Best Wedding Venue in Hampshire & the Isle of Wight” for two consecutive years in 2022 and 2023, has concluded its sixth summer of unique events. Kris Anderson has been General Manager since the venue’s opening in 2018 and has overseen the growth of the venue which is known for its rustic feel, stunning surroundings, and quality locally-sourced food. “It’s been amazing to see how far we’ve come in six years, especially considering the challenges we faced during the COVID lockdowns. Navigating through those difficult times wasn’t easy, but it pushed us to be more creative and resilient. Now, we’re the only venue in the region offering such a unique blend of events. Since 2018 we have hosted more than 250 weddings and served more than 10,000 luxury afternoon teas. Our average annual footfall in our first year was approximately 30,000, compared to this year’s estimated annual footfall of 75,000.” Summer 2024 at Kimbridge Barn was packed with unique events, such as Ibiza themed ‘Summer Sundowner’ party night - which saw the barn transformed into a dance oor with live music from DJs and musicians. Every Friday throughout summer, the venue also held a wood- re pizza evening in its cafe courtyard with live performances from local musicians. e season came to a close with the ‘Feast Over Fire’ - an outdoor evening of delicious seafood grilled right in front of your eyes by the team of talented chefs. Kris continued: “Planning and hosting events at Kimbridge is always incredibly fun and rewarding. The team takes huge joy in tailoring everything to perfection, especially when it comes to hosting weddings. Keep your eyes peeled for some exciting events coming, particularly as we enter the festive period!” Kimbridge Barn in Romsey has marked its sixth full year in business with record breaking figures Original Pier Pillar Gets a Make-over e small pillar that has been standing at the entrance to Hythe Pier since its construction has received a ‘makeover’. Erected in 1880 it had been showing its age. Early photographs clearly confirm its presence, before a lamppost was added when electric lighting was introduced during the early 1920’s. The re-rendering and repainting of the pillar is one of a number of small tasks being undertaken by the Hythe Pier Heritage Association assisted by volunteers from the Shed (at the Pier) to improve the Hythe Pier entrance. e dilapidated century old-lamppost has been removed from the pillar; a modern ‘period’ replacement is being sought. New fencing to match the new platform handrails will be installed, allowing the removal of the temporary safety fencing that has been in place during the construction of the new shore end station platform. At the seaward end of the pier, the perspex panels over the station are being replaced, ensuring that it is drier at the platform.
