If you would like a table please email: Please email: fundraising@ hytheseascouts.org.uk Hythe Sea Scouts Christmas Craft Evening Calshot Tower Flies the Flag is year marks the 30th Anniversary of National Coastwatch Institution (NCI), a little known group which is part of the Search and Rescue Organisation. To mark this occasion a ag listing all of the Stations around the English and Welsh coast is being passed from station to station in a variety of very imaginative ways. NCI began at a tiny ex Coastguard Station positioned on e Lizard, near Helston in Cornwall. e Coastguard cover had been withdrawn and centralised some time earlier, leaving a disused base. Two local shermen unfortunately lost their lives, and local folk asked if they could use the building, and keep a lookout, and this was the beginning of the NCI, now known as ‘Eyes Along e Coast’. From these humble beginnings, the group has now grown to over 60 Stations, with an amazing volunteer force of approximately 3000. e group is truly made up of volunteers who are not given funding. e ag reached NCI Stone Point, the Station at Lepe Country Park, arriving by vintage Fire Engine, from the NCI Station at Hengistbury Head. e next day, it was taken by two lovely vintage vehicles, Monty a 1959 2 door Morris Minor saloon, and Ethel, a 1970 Morris Traveller, to Calshot Spit, where the ag uttered to adorn the tall NCI Calshot Tower. e following day, it was on its way to Lee-on-the-Solent NCI Station, this time on the Hamble Independent Lifeboat, accompanied by Calshot Station Manager Bryan Young. Here it was handed over to continue the journey around the coast. New volunteers are always welcome at the Stations, and training is given to those who wish to become watchkeepers. e commitment that is requested is a small one of just an average of three shi s monthly, although many Watchkeepers cover more than this. Perhaps attracted by the view from the Calshot Tower station, which has now been open for 15 years, volunteers travel for many miles to carry out watches.
