Some WaterCAN members were observed scrumping a souvenir pear from Lucie’s abundantly fruitful pear tree. Our next open session features Lucie talking about ‘ e Long History of Plastic’, a subject which we have spent a long time discussing. No doubt Lucie’s talk will engender a lively debate, which hopefully will help to develop a local action plan around plastic. 21st October, 7pm–9pm in the upstairs hall at Cornerstone Church, New Road Hythe SO45 6BR. All welcome, £1 entry. Our last open session on the harmful e ects of wood burning became particularly relevant in the light of a study by Imperial College just published, which followed looking at the dates of death of 465,000 people over a ten year period. e researchers found a clear link between dates of death from respiratory problems when pollution levels from the burning of wood and other solids was highest. More details in the next issue. However, the good news is that recent research, based on data from the UK Met O ce’s global climate models, shows very clearly that focused government action can lead to cleaner air. e model is particularly striking in demonstrating the e ects of the clean air acts in London following the 1952 smog (yes, some of us can still remember that!), and, more recently, Chinese action prompted by the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. More local good news is the reintroduction of 3 buses an hour to and from Southampton from the Waterside. However, Waterside Changemakers are also making a strong case for improved services to less accessible parts of the Waterside, new services to Southampton General Hospital and Lymington, and improved off-peak services. Alongside this, China is installing record amounts of solar and wind so that, according to energy experts in Australia, China would meet its end of 2030 targets six and a half years early.
