Hythe Watches and Clocks Heart Transplant Patient is the First to Sign up to Heartbeat’s New Charity Walking Event Heart transplant patient, former NHS worker and a Trustee, Robbie Burns, 53, is the rst to sign up for cardiac charity Heartbeat’s ‘Heart & Stroll’ walk around Southampton Common on 29th June 2025. ‘Heart & Stroll’ aims to raise awareness of heart health by focusing on the many physical and emotional benefits of walking and gentle exercise, raising much-needed funds along the way. It is set to be Heartbeat’s biggest fundraising event to date, with over 2,000 people expected to take part. Heartbeat Trustee Robbie Burns was born with a heart defect that saw him endure two open heart operations as a child. He underwent a heart transplant in June 2020 and the following year he celebrated his transplant by organising a 15-mile walk that raised £8,000 for Heartbeat. Excited to take on his next walking challenge, Robbie said: “I’m delighted to be the first person to sign up for ‘Heart & Stroll’. It is set to be a fabulous day and it’s family and dog friendly too. Everyone who takes part will get a medal and there will be live music plus a variety of stalls and delicious food in the event village. I want to encourage as many people as possible to walk in honour of someone who is living with a heart condition, knows someone who has heart issues, or simply wants to connect with others and make new friends.” ‘Heart & Stroll’ is inspired by Mark Ind, CEO of Heartbeat, whose son, Alex, was born with a congenital heart condition. Mark knows the bene ts of even gentle exercise for heart health. He said: “‘Heart & Stroll’ is just that. We want people to focus and think about how they can look after their heart by taking part in this gentle exercise. At the same time, we want to give them the space to think about loved ones affected by heart disease. It’s a fantastic way to raise funds for the cardiac unit while having a lot of fun in the process.” Tanya Harder, Community Fundraising and Marketing Manager, is taking the lead in organising the event to bring the community together and ensure its success. Businesses are encouraged to get involved through available sponsorship opportunities by getting in touch with Tanya and her colleague Tina Richardson on 02380 706095 or email tanya@heartbeat.org.uk. Funds raised will go towards the work of the Wessex Cardiac Unit at University Hospital Southampton, which supports patients and their families, looking a er anyone who needs care, from anywhere.
