Earlier on arrival at the Pier, His Royal Highness had been met by Nigel Atkinson Esq, the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire who in turn introduced him to Anthony Smith, Chairman of the Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA), which had undertaken the renovation project. Mr Smith proceeded to introduce e Duke to Sath Naidoo, Manager of the Hythe Ferry, HPHA Directors Philip Appleyard, Councillor Alex Wade and Allan Fairhead, also a Director of the Hythe Shed (at the Pier) which carried out much of the work. His Royal Highness subsequently inspected one of the railway carriages under renovation in the adjacent workshop, where he was introduced to Alan Titheridge, HPHA Director who explained the progress of the train renovation project, and a group of ferry company engineering sta and volunteers working on the carriage that had carried King George VI along the pier during a Second World War visit. Outside of the workshop, he spoke with HPHA Director John Goddard about the track renovation scheme. A er cutting the ribbon, e Duke boarded the train and travelled the 640 metres length of the pier. At the pier head John Goddard explained future planned renovation works. e Duke then met Jill Gower, HPHA Director responsible for education, who presented him to a group of schoolchildren and their teacher from Hythe Primary School. He was invited to view an exhibition of children’s art depicting the train and pier. from an Admiralty launch. Accompanied by Princes Leopold and Maurice of Battenberg (grandsons of Queen Victoria) and Princess Beatrice of Battenberg (youngest child of Queen Victoria), the Spanish monarch ambled along the pier to the joyous cheers of onlookers, before being taken to Highcli e Castle by a eet of cars assembled at the Drummond Arms. A er a lunch, the royal party returned to Hythe, en route to Osbourne Castle on the Isle of Wight. King Alphonso subsequently returned to Madrid for his wedding to Princess Ena of Battenberg (youngest grandchild of Queen Victoria) on 31st May. e occasion was marred by a fortunately unsuccessful assassination attempt. Almost two decades earlier, on 13th August 1888, Princess Beatrice of Battenberg’s husband Prince Henry of Battenberg had promenaded along Hythe Pier during a private visit to the New Forest, having alighted from a launch from his yacht at anchor nearby. Princess Beatrice would become a frequent visitor during the rst decade of the 20th Century, as on 25th August 1909 when she attended a garden party at West Cli Hall. Kaiser Wilhelm II, the last Emperor of Germany, graced Hythe Pier on 6th December 1907. At shortly before noon, he arrived at the pier entrance by car from Highcli e Castle. During a well-orchestrated visit, he walked the length of the pier applauded by a large crowd to board a launch that took him on a tour of the harbour before embarking the German Royal Yacht Hohenzollern at anchor o Netley. e crowds on and nearby the pier had swollen considerably by the time he alighted the pier landing stage, carpeted for the occasion, again at about 4 o’clock. He subsequently made his way through the excited gathering to his car, waiting at the pier entrance to take him back to Highcli e. His Royal Highness reboarded the train and returned to the renovated landward pier station. Before he departed Hythe Pier, Allan Fairhead presented His Royal Highness with a gi of thanks for the visit, a small section of the railway track that had been in service for more than four decades mounted on a piece of polished wood reclaimed from a previous railway carriage restoration. Royal visitors treading the boards When His Royal Highness visited Hythe Pier, he was following in the footsteps of a number of previous royal visitors. His Royal Highness visited Sway in the heart of the National Park and toured the site of arts, architecture and education charity SpudWorks. e Duke viewed ‘ e Living Room’ – an informal art therapy space for people with dementia and mental health issues, the design being a modern spin on an oast house found across Hampshire and beyond. Finished in locally sourced materials and incorporating several energy e cient features, the building received an NPA Building Design Award earlier this year with the judging panel describing the design as having ‘remarkable detailing’ and being ‘innovative on every level’. Artists’ studios were also open to view. His Royal Highness was accompanied by His Majesty’s Left to right: Tom Sofikis of SpudWorks charity in Sway greets HRH The Duke of Gloucester with Emily Carter and Steve Avery of the New Forest National Park Authority and His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire Nigel Atkinson Esq buildings went through a series of iterations before planning permission could be granted. e Duke was presented to Sway Parish Chair Councillor Howard Millett and Sway Parish Council Clerk Katie Walding at Sway Manor Hotel to hear about building design considerations in the village. A discussion point was a display about the NPA’s Local List – an initiative to work with communities to highlight assets of architectural or historic interest which contribute to the character and appearance of the National Park. Special consideration is then given to assets of local interest when planning proposals are submitted. New Forest National Park Authority Chair David Bence said: “The New Forest is renowned for its natural environment but its built environment is also an important part of the local character of the area. The National Park Authority receives around 1,000 planning applications each year. Over 80% are approved thanks to work with the applicant to ensure that any developments are in keeping with and enhance local communities. His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester has a keen interest in architecture and local heritage and we were delighted to show him high quality schemes ranging from new homes to businesses and vital community services.” e Duke also visited converted chapel East Boldre Community Stores in the New Forest National Park – a community owned and run shop which opened in February 2024 to safeguard vital local services when the existing village shop and Post O ce closed. Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire Nigel Atkinson Esq and they met NPA Chair David Bence, NPA Planning Committee Chair Gordon Bailey and Cllr David Hawkins, Chairman of New Forest District Council. Tom So kitis and Suna Imre of SpudWorks explained the work of the charity while Steve Avery, the NPA’s Executive Director of Strategy and Planning, and Building Design and Conservation Officer Emily Carter discussed building design in the National Park. Two other nearby developments were highlighted – a former pub and Grade II Listed Building called Forest Heath House which has been turned into ve ats; and a former garage business site which in 2019 was turned into the Sway Co-op building, with four ats above and four new houses behind. e design of the new Bramshaw WI Jumble Sale Bramshaw WI is holding a Jumble Sale at Bramshaw Village Hall on Saturday 2nd November at 2pm.
