Local veteran Charlie served on HMS Broadsword and is a member of the Bomb Alley Survivors Club. His presentation told the story of what took place during the con ict and included incredible photographs taken at the time. Rotarians and their guests were so grateful to Charlie for sharing his stories, some of which were light-hearted and many very moving and emotional, highlighting the dangers faced by the brave armed forces during this war. H&W Rotary were pleased to make a Charlie Threlfall and Hythe & Waterside Rotary President Terri Whitehouse donation to the RNLI, where Charlie is currently training to become a volunteer. D-Day Story Portsmouth exhibitions. is was the rst time that a Military Heritage Exhibition had been invited to the show which has traditionally been an agricultural and countryside pursuits show. Chris Barrington-Brown invited and organised the exhibitors to come together in one large marquee. e marquee was a huge success with a massive footfall throughout the day. e joint exhibition focussed on the importance of the Hampshire area in the build up to the embarkation to Normandy, France, and the role of the 12 air elds during WW2. Very few people realised that Romsey was an important ‘marshalling area’, supplying the correct personnel to their various locations on the South coast. e Military Heritage Museum had a splendid display of WW2 artefacts, including the only surviving MG42 machine gun from Omaha Beach, a Bren Gun and 2 Vickers machine guns. ese were a magnet to the many children coming into the tent. e D-Day Lepe Heritage Group were able to show a genuine piece of the original PLUTO (Pipeline Under e Ocean) pipeline (on loan from Lepe Country Park), clearly showing the di erent layers of the various metals used in its construction. e interest shown by the public was very satisfying, especially the genuine appreciation of the wealth of knowledge available from the various exhibitors. Many visitors had no idea of the importance of the area and the various roles ful lled during the WW2 period. roughout the day there were 6 twenty minute presentations, some from the exhibitors, which were well attended. ey included: Andy Skinner from Sea City Museum, Andrew Whitmarsh telling the D-Day Story South Hampshire (D-Day in 10 objects), Henry Goodhall from Friends of the New Forest Air elds, Ian Maclean from the D-Day Lepe Heritage Group, Marc Heighway New Forest Air elds D-Day stories and Chris Barrington-Brown – D-Day, what happened in Romsey. e interested audience asked many questions and the mix of exhibitors, with their vast and varied knowledge, were able to give comprehensive answers. Some visitors, a erwards, requested some of the exhibitors for a presentation to be given to their local clubs. Chris Barrington-Brown had also managed to secure the presence of Colonel Cyril IORDANOW the French Liaison O cer to army HQ, based in Andover who look splendid in his colourful fulldress uniform. Following on from this successful meeting of like-minded organisations in the region, it is planned for them to get together to see how the pooled knowledge could reach a wider audience, especially academic institutions.
