In 2017 Aaron returned to high level training with the goal to achieve selection back onto the GB team and was successful. Last year he played in the inaugural Quad Nations Event held in Leicester. He said: “To be back in Leicester playing with such a strong team, was an honour. We have a great squad and coaches.” Fast paced and violent, players compete in s p e c i a l l y - d e s i g n e d , manual wheelchairs and must meet a minimum disability criterion, classifiable under the sport classi cation rules. All competing athletes were either born with physical disabilities, or have su ered illness which has a ected their mobility, or experienced life-changing injuries through accidents, including those serving in the armed forces. Described by spectators and sports commentators as brutal, the supercharged tournament was once again held at Leicester’s Morningside Arena earlier this month bringing together three incredible days of the world’s best ‘Murderball’ teams for this intense, e l i t e - s t a n d a r d competition. Great Britain were up against Japan in the nal, Japan won the King Power Quad Nations nal by just 2 tries to collect the trophy. e spectators were on their feet as GB star athletes Aaron Phipps and Jim Roberts smashed into Yukinobu. Both Phipps and Roberts went on to win individual awards as best in their class of all the teams competing. The tournament marked an important performance opportunity for Great Britain ahead of the 2019 European Championships in Denmark, as well as the World Wheelchair Rugby Challenge which will be played alongside the Rugby World Cup in Tokyo in October and involve the top eight teams in the world. Aaron said: “It was a fantastic tournament, and one I was proud to be a part of. Each team played well and while we are of course disappointed to have not picked up gold, I feel that together we made some incredible SUCCESSFUL LOCAL ATHLETE Aaron Phipps Continued from front page gains and will be looking forward to Japan in 2020.” For more details visit www.wrquadnations.com Hythe Women into Work event will be held at Hythe Jobcentre, 15-17 Pylewell Road, Hythe, SO45 6ZL on Wednesday 7th May from 10am until 2pm.
