Working 364 days a year we have almost 100 dedicated highly trained volunteers who give their time freely to help others in need. As part of the national Search and Rescue organisation (SAR) we have been involved in over 50 local incidents each year since our start and will continue now with the satellite station, just opened at Lepe Country Park covering an area of the Solent not previously viewed by the Tower. We are now looking forward to even more successful outcomes in the future”. Past Station Manager Colin Lewis also commented on the dedication and professionalism of the o cers who have helped to bring this all about. Station Manager Diana Roblett and Training Officer Peter Brown attended a garden party Queens Award for Voluntary Service Continued from front at Buckingham Palace in May, along with other recipients of this year’s Award. Councillor Alexis McEvoy, who also attended the presentation, said: “I have supported NCI Calshot for many years and am really impressed by the many loyal and hardworking volunteers who provide the eyes and ears along the coast. This is a much deserved award.” Calshot NCI is one of 281 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. The number of nominations and awards has increased year on year since the awards were introduced in 2002, showing that the voluntary sector is thriving and full of innovative ideas to make life better for those around them. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise o u t s t a n d i n g work by v o l u n t e e r groups to bene t their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Winners are announced each year on 2nd June – the anniversary of the Queen’s C o r o n a t i o n . Award winners this year are wonderfully diverse. ey include volunteers helping people overcome mental health problems through sport, volunteers using caravans as mobile café and information centres in geographically remote locations and another group mentoring children who have a parent in prison. Fawley Parish Council, working with the Fawley Mensshed, is also placing small displays of poppies on council land in and around the parish as a reminder of the members of the armed forces who lost their lives in the line of duty. e Fawley Mensshed have made the poppies as part of their sessions – the shed at Newlands Road; by the Scout Hut is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and ursdays between 10am until 4pm with new members always welcome. Some members of the Fawley Youth Club which runs on Friday evenings at the recreation centre at Gang Warily will plant the poppies along Newlands Road with others being placed at Ashlett Creek, Calshot and Fawley Village. e poppies will be in place from mid- October onwards until Remembrance Sunday 2019.
