HPHA and the volunteers from the Men’s Shed are cha ng at the bit to nish the job as soon as restrictions are li ed. On 5th January BBC South Today included a feature on HPHA and the Men’s Shed and their work on the carriage. is can be viewed on the HPHA website: www.hythepierha. org.uk where a donation can be made to assist with the project of restoring the train and the pier. A labour of love, restoring the inside of the carriage 4 (Photo by Alan Titheridge ) Hythe Pier Heritage As soc i a t i on in conjunction with the Men’s Shed (at the Pier) have been working whenever possible, complying with restrictions, over the past few months to return the 99 years old railcar as close as possible to its original condition. New frames made from Iroko, a tough durable hardwood sometimes referred to as Nigerian Teak, have been tted along one side. New panels have also been manufactured, fixed, and painted. e doors, repaired and re-stained, are ready for installation once new runners are in place. e internal paintwork has been painstakingly cleaned and primed ready for an application of a nal coat. e seats were found to be in an incredibly good condition and have been thoroughly cleaned and re-stained. New lighting has been partially installed. 6mm toughened glass for the windows has been ordered. Blue Funnel Ferries sta have been overhauling the bogies and carrying out maintenance on the under-carriage framework. ere is much still to do 2021 is here and is proving not quite what we had all hoped for. The Pandemic continues to be with us, severe restrictions are in place and the best news, the vaccine programme is underway offering so much hope. Whilst the Waterside Cancer Support Centre must remain closed, the team continue to support anyone living with any type of cancer during these challenging times. ey urge anyone a ected by cancer; a patient, a family member, a carer, or anyone bereaved through cancer, to get in touch.
