Written by Chemistry, Biology and Psychology Student George Lee in Collaboration with Brockenhurst College Traditionally, there have been 4 ways of creating vaccines. e rst are by far the most common and work by exposing your immune system to a weakened or dead version of a virus or bacteria. ese are how the MMR and annual Flu vaccines work. Neither will make you particularly ill but a er your immune system has dealt with the infection, some T-cells and B-cells turn into Memory T-cells and Memory B-cells. As you would expect from their names, these cells remember the virus or bacteria they just fought, meaning that if you are infected with the same pathogen your body knows how to produce the correct response to get rid of the infection. ese cells live in the body for a long time and are how you can become immune to pathogen like chicken pox. e next traditional vaccine is injecting an inert toxin (usually for bacterial diseases such as tetanus), triggering a similar immune response to the rst two. e last type of traditional vaccine is the recombinant vaccine, used for the HPV vaccine. is generally uses the spike protein of viruses – the part of the virus which allows them to enter cells. ese proteins are harmless on their own but are enough to teach the vaccine takes a lot of time and money, extending the time it takes to develop a vaccine. e two new types of vaccines are the mRNA and Adenovirus vaccines; both move the production of spike proteins from the lab into the body, cutting time and costs. e mRNA vaccines use a section of COVID-19’s genetic information which encodes for the spike protein and transfers this into messenger RNA (mRNA). is is injected into the body and the harmless spike protein is produced by our own cells, triggering the same immune responses as described above. e P zer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines use this method. Adenovirus vaccines use a similar method but use DNA instead of mRNA, so an innocuous host virus is necessary to get DNA into cells – kind of like a trojan horse. is method is used for the Oxford-AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. Both these new kinds of vaccines are causing much excitement as vaccines which deliver speci c instructions to your immune system which can be developed quickly are a very powerful weapon and have a whole range of possible uses. It has even been suggested that an mRNA vaccine could be used to boost our immune systems to ght cancer or even HIV-AIDS.
