New dahlia varieties, known as seedlings, are planted out in a field providing a glorious display of colour which is open for viewing from 17th August until the end of October or the first frosts. There are grass walkways and, although there is a slight incline, wheelchair access is possible. There is also seating around the field and the dahlias can also be viewed from the tearoom and teagarden. Entrance to the field is free. Dahlias ower from mid-July, right through to the rst frost, which in some areas can be up until the beginning of November. ere are so many colour variations, some of the two toned colours look as if they have been created by an artist with great dedication, many di erent size and shape blooms, some as large as dinner plates right down to the small pom dahlias. In recent years the dahlia has become popular in gardens to attract bees, especially the single petal varieties where the pollen is on show from the Gilberts Dahlia Field minute the bud opens up. Gilbert’s Nursery, which also has a tearoom serving freshly prepared food, delicious cakes and cream teas, is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am until 5pm, Sunday 10am until 4pm, and is closed Mondays, except Bank Holidays. e eld is open the same time as the nursery however the eld will be closed 30 minutes before the nursery closes.
