Also commemorated on the World War 1 memorial are George Lowe, born 1889, and his younger brother Harry (Henry) Lowe born 1893. eir parents, George and Alice Mary Lowe had a total of 9 children, and the family lived at New Cottages, Langley. Before the war George worked as a brick maker, and had married Elizabeth where they lived at Evergreen Cottage, in Black eld. George became a member of the Mercantile Marine Reserve, and during WW1 he served as a reman on the requisitioned yacht H.M.Aegusa. Sadly he was killed, aged 27, on 27th April 1916, when the ship was sunk by mines laid by German submarine U73, o of Malta. Six crew members died. pilot, Lieutenant John B. Kiddell, had to take violent evasive action to avoid being shot down. Sadly, Geo rey was thrown from the cockpit during these actions and fell to his death in the sea. Both the pilot and the Air Gunner V.S.A. Moore survived the combat and landed safely back in England. In May 1940 the aeroplane was transferred from HMS Glorious (a carrier) to RAF coastal command to operate from shore based air elds, to take part in support operations for the Dunkirk evacuation. Also commemorated on the WW2 memorial is Able Seaman Donald Anthony Du n RN (C/ SR 8127). He was born in 1918 just before WW1 ended, and was the son of Edmund and Louise Du n of Park Grove, Beaulieu. He joined the Royal Navy a er leaving school, and served on the submarine H44. In 1940 Able Seaman Du n was serving aboard His Majesty’s Motor Launch 144. By March 1941, the boat was part of the 5th ML Flotilla based at Newhaven in Sussex. By day they were an Air- Sea Rescue unit, and by night they hunted German E-boats near the French coast. At dusk on the evening of 23rd September 1941, ML144 hit a mine o the coast o Dungeness. Five of the crew, including ‘Tony’ as he was always called, lost their lives. It is not known when ‘Tony’ married Nellie May of Fawley, but they lived at Charmouth Cottage, Rollestone Road, Holbury and had one son. Tony is actually buried in Black eld Cemetery as well as being commemorated in All Saint’s Church Fawley, e Village Hall memorial Fawley, the Beaulieu War Memorial and the Saint Paul’s Churchyard Memorial. ese ‘Tales’ are representative of the courage shown by local young men during the two World Wars. “ They shall not grow old, as we that are left, grow old.” Following on from my previously published ‘Tale’ do you or anyone you know, have any direct relations who arrived from the Island of Tristan de Cunha? Aegusa was Walter George Toms, son of George and Fanny (Nee Kitchington) Toms, who lived at Cloverly Cottage, West Common, Fawley (now Langley). He was also serving with the RNVR as a reman, and perished alongside George Lowe. He is commemorated on the War Memorial Plaque. George Lowe’s brother, Harry also died in WW1. He served in the Royal Field Artillery, service number 79215, 83rd Brigade, C battalion, as a Bombadier and died on 12th October 1917, aged 24. He is buried at Vlamertinghe Cemetery, Belgium. e rst name on the WW2 memorial is Geo rey Nethercote Beaumont, born 10th March 1911. On 26th May 1940 he was the Observer in a crew of 3, ying in a Fairey Sword sh Mk.1 (L2829 G5-H) biplane, part of 825 Squadron. ey were tracking the gun re, from the cruiser HMS Galatea, on the German gun batteries at Calais, France. e little biplane was spotted and attacked by two German Messerschmitt 109’s. e Continued from page 23
