Pictured Right: ‘Outstared by a hare’ photograph by David Bailey WILDLIFE WANDERINGS EXHIBITION AT THE NEW FOREST HERITAGE CENTRE treatments established a good remission. He was moved to maintenance in March 2021 and coped well with both remote and regular schooling in line with his classmates, even completing his GCSEs with ying colours. In June 2021, however, he su ered a relapse and returned to hospital for further intensive treatments. Unfortunately, Ben had proved to be allergic to some of the prescribed treatment so alternatives had to be devised. Ultimately, though, his cancer did not respond adequately, and sadly he wasn’t cleared t for a stem cell transplant. Ben was an extraordinary young man. Amongst other interests he adored Dungeons & Dragons and Ben’s family felt the game represented Ben completely as everything about him was adventurous, ercely loyal, brave and passionate. Ben was a showman and an adventurer, but above all, someone who cared deeply for everyone. at is why he wanted friends, family and classmates to raise money for childhood cancer research, so that other children and their families are given hope in the future. Ben’s Dad Mike explains: “Childhood cancer research is something that has been – and is still – chronically underfunded, and we want to educate people as to the extent to which children’s cancer has been, and continues to be, the poor relation of cancer research. In turn, we want them to educate others, to raise awareness of the issue so that it can change. Sadly Ben lost his battle with cancer, passing away on 8th October 2021. Ben Pavitt’s Legacy of Love Fund continues to raise funds for childhood cancer research.
