Male barbershop chorus Ocean Harmony has done well to come through the last two years of Covid restrictions by meeting online and practising in person under strict guidelines to safeguard members. Now they are taking their ‘show must go on’ attitude a step further by welcoming newcomers to a friendly, six-week a cappella singing course. Chairman John Yapp said: “Already there’s a real energy and enthusiasm in the chorus and we’re really enjoying singing together again. During lockdown we kept going with practising, singing and socials online; we then met outside last summer – singing in a car park – and finally we’re back singing inside a well-ventilated hall. We’ve been very fortunate keeping the chorus going and now we’re ready to throw open our doors to new members as we enter a new era.” Ocean Harmony is a registered charity and has grown steadily since it was formed in 2003. It performs locally as well as taking part in local and national competitions. Its best performances have come in recent years - claiming 12th place in the prestigious British Association of Barbershop Singers UK competition in 2019. “You do not have to take part in the competitions to be part of Ocean Harmony,” added John. “It is just one small part of what we do. Singing locally and at social events are just as important to us.” Barbershop singing is made up of four sections - bass, lead, tenor and baritone - which blend to give the chorus its unique sound. You do not need to have any previous experience of singing to join the course or be able to read music. Anyone interested in giving a cappella singing a try will be given free tuition for six weeks at the choir’s weekly meeting on Wednesday evenings at Colbury Memorial Hall, near Totton (7.15pm), starting on 6th April . ere is no obligation to join.
