He was a member of the 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards WW2. Cecil has returned every year since the end of the war, to honour and remember his fallen colleagues. He holds a simple low key service at the war memorial situated at the east end of Lepe Beach overlooking the Solent. Major Graeme Greene organised and introduced the ceremony. is Year 2 former members of the 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards attended, Major Shaun Leavey (retired) and Lt. Colonel Luke Duckworth (retired), plus colleagues of Lepe Country Park, e D-Day Lepe Heritage Group and friends, plus members of the public who were passing by. Cecil is now 98 and a half years old, and is supported by his sons and nephew on this annual pilgrimage. Cecil, a veteran of D-Day, stands and reads out the 176 names of the members of the Regiment who gave their lives in World War ll. ‘In proud memory of all those of his comrades, who served and have died both during active service or in peace time and were known or unknown to those present. He remembers their service to their Country, for Peace and Freedom, and their comradeship with whom they served’. Cecil brings his own music with him so that a er the Exhortation and the nal words ‘We Will Remember em’ he can play ‘ e Last Post’, followed by one minute silence. Reveille is played and Wreaths are laid. Cecil Newton laid his wreath, and this year, as always, Gilly Drummond laid a wreath on behalf of Cadland Estate where so many of the soldiers and vehicles were hidden within the trees, prior to embarkation. Major Graeme Green laid a wreath on behalf of the Cecil talking about his medals to Peter Royal Dragoon Guards and Alison Steele placed a wreath on behalf of the Friends of Lepe. On 4th June Cecil and family then travel to Normandy for the commemoration service with other D-Day veterans, and Cecil scatters the Lepe Beach sand onto the Normandy beach. is year it was especially rewarding to see Peter, a 10 year old boy, talking to Cecil, asking him about his experiences and asking Cecil to explain the medals he was wearing. It is so important to have such a natural curiosity about such an important event. WWII history is rarely taught in schools, yet it is the foundation on which our free society is built.
