Ladies are coming together to cra for local charity, Tools for Self Reliance, to raise funds and awareness. A er being away for 2 years due to Covid-19, they are back in 2022, ready to get cra ing! e Cra 2 Cra group have been running for over 12 years, and it all started through the love of haberdashery and helping others. e charity gets many haberdashery donations, including materials, some of which are not suitable to send to Africa. So, some of their volunteers at Netley Marsh decided to put those items to good use, by cra ing and then selling their cra s for fundraising. For example, they have taken donated neck ties and have merged them together to create bottle bags! e ladies of Cra 2 Cra crocheted a bollard in Romsey, to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee! eir creative imagination doesn’t stop them, which is why they are now holding Cra Workshops at the Tools for Self Reliance HQ. Join them on the 21st July, 2-4pm, for the Japanese Folded Patchwork tutorial, its only £15pp and all funds go towards the charity work in Africa. Tools for Self Reliance has, for over forty years, worked to support people to learn skills they can use to nd work and earn an income. Working with local partners in ve African countries, the charity raises A er months of painstaking but dedicated work by volunteers from the Hythe Shed (at the Pier), a second renovated passenger carriage was rolled out of the Blue Funnel Ferries’ workshop at the end of June, almost a century a er it rst arrived in Hythe. It was ordered by Mr omas Percy from the Drewry Car Company of London and built to a design by on its sub-frame before being tted with new side frames and exterior skins. e frames were constructed in the Hythe Shed using Iroko, a hardwood also known as African Teak and renowned for its durability and rich grain, but wherever possible original timber was retained. All the interior slatted seating was in remarkedly good condition and therefore retained, albeit with a fresh coating of varnish. Aluminium chequer-plate was tted to the oor, o ering protection for the original ooring beneath. New electrics installed and reglazed, the carriage was repositioned back on track for subsequent application of glass- bre to the roof and signwriting in advance of its re-entry into service in time for the Centenary Celebration. In Africa the tools are used to support the delivery of training and are distributed to training graduates so they can start their own small business and generate income to support themselves and their families.
