Families from Romsey, and the areas spanning the Waterside to Fawley attended the day. e organisers Lions Pat Geere, Maureen Geere and Sandra Trowbridge are at one of the ticket outlets with the club mascot ‘Richard the Lionheart’ said: “It is very rewarding seeing happy children of all ages, many of whom have been awake for hours in anticipation of the fun day ahead. Others were wide eyed in amazement when they arrived not having been told where they were going that day. This year the weather was perfect, and they will have had a day to remember.” Annual Woodcarving Trophies Waterside Woodcarvers recently held their June Social and annual Trophy Night at St Andrew’s, Dibden Purlieu. e evening weather was perfect for a friendly boules competition on the lawn, using an adapted set of rules. Di Smith won the competition but only by a centimetre! ey then adjourned for refreshments, a ra e and the results of the voting for the annual woodcarving awards. e subjects were very varied and standards were very high in both experienced and novice categories. Outright winner of the novice class was Kailas Patel with a gorgeous dove. In the experienced class, runner up was Andy Wainman with the gure of a young boy facing a door. e Fred Wilson Trophy was won outright by Maggie Port for an outstanding carving of a blackbird. Maggie has previously won national awards for her bird carvings and she has made a beautiful life-size wren which you could win in a prize draw at the club’s annual exhibition at St Andrew’s on Saturday 13th August. e club continues to meet on alternate ursday evenings at Applemore College during term time. e autumn term workshops will start on Thursday 8th September, 6.30pm-8.30pm. For more details please see the website www.watersidewoodcarvers.co.uk or phone Di Smith on 023 8084 5787. e Lyndhurst Book, Map and Ephemera fair is taking place on Saturday 16th July at the Lyndhurst Community Centre, which is based within the car park in the village. e fair, held six times a year, has up to 15 sellers selling a wide range of antiquarian to second hand books on many di erent subjects, maps, and ephemera with plenty of local interest to Hampshire, and surrounding counties. is independent fair o ers a warm welcome to all visitors, with plenty of choice on o er.
