RNLI Hythe and Calshot fundraising branch are sad to announce that, a er a whopping 25 years, branch treasurer, Jenny Croxson, has decided to step down from the Committee at their next AGM. Jenny attended her rst Committee meeting back in December 1997 and very quickly became an invaluable member of the branch. Besides her role as the longstanding branch treasurer, Jenny has also held various roles at the RNLI Calshot Station over the years. A natural organiser, Jenny would o en be front and centre at the annual Great Waterside Ra Race, station open days, quizzes, carpet races and tea stalls, making sure operations were going well and volunteers – and the money – were being looked a er. Branch Press O cer, Dan Poole says: “It is truly remarkable that Jenny has been at the heart of the local RNLI for a quarter of a century. There’s not much which has happened in that time that she’s not been involved in: whether it has been keeping the accounts, co-ordinating fundraising events or getting the Betty’s 5p Pots initiative off the Presentation of the cheque at the Jolly Sailor ground here, Jenny has been at the centre of it. I have been looking for photos of her through the years and we’ve got surprisingly few – and that’s because she never stays still for long enough!” Jenny will be much-missed and the Committee are most grateful for all she and husband, Geo , have done over the years. ey wish them both all the very best for the future. Many years ago in 1991, Derek Olden having an old tractor, had the idea of forming a club for owners of old tractors and engines (anything old), as there were no clubs or organisations in the area for like-minded people. So, in November 1991 Derek invited a group of friends and guests to the little old prefabricated Church Hall in Marchwood, where a friend was to show his old lms about old tractors. Expecting only one or two people to attend, surprisingly word spread and the hall was full to capacity (once the right Church Hall was found!), and hence the New Forest Vintage Tractor and Engine Club was formed. Over the years the Club has grown and now has well over 200 members meeting at Copythorne Village Hall on the last Friday of each winter month. e Club and the Committee has been led by Derek Olden since that day 31 years ago, and has created many opportunities for its members, being Club shows and meetings, supporting other vintage rallies and country shows around Hampshire and Dorset. Most importantly it has become a focal point for like-minded people to gather and exchange their knowledge and skills about maintaining old machinery and preserving old skills such as vintage ploughing, and keeping many machines in preservation. Derek nally decided to step down from the Club Chairmanship and Committee on the 25th November, exactly 31 years from the Clubs rst meeting. Derek with his wife Christine were presented with Honorary Membership along with an engraved vase, owers and a model of one of his tractors mounted on an engraved base. e New Forest Vintage Tractor & Engine Club is very well known throughout the New Forest and further a eld for its commitment to support events as a club, and creating opportunities for its members to display, work and play with their tractors, engines and other classic and interesting vehicles. e club has supported many local organisations over the years such as Longdown Activity Farm, Honeypot House and the Countryside Education Trust in Beaulieu, supporting and holding events and promotional activities, as well as fundraising for some of these and many small local New Forest charities. Since its inception, the Club and members have been involved with supporting local shows such as Netley Marsh Steam & Cra Fayre, Romsey Show, Alresford Show, Fawley Show, e New Forest Show and Hampshire County Show and many more. e Club with its strong committee will continue to support and o er opportunities to its members holding events and supporting many shows well into the future. On Derek’s nal night as Chairman almost all the Club membership and the Committee were in full attendance to thank him for his commitment and long service, and to wish him the best of luck and good health for the future, with an assurance of leaving the Club in good hands with a strong Committee taking it forward for the future. Snow is far from unknown in spring, but the amount that fell that year has never been recorded in April, before or since. e rst three months of 1908 were unexceptional; occasionally windy, but mostly dull and wet, with average temperatures. April looked like being much the same, but this changed abruptly on the 19th, Easter Sunday, when an area of very low pressure started to force polar air down over Britain. e rst wave passed within a day, but a series of others followed, each bringing stronger winds, hail and snow. ere followed a 4-day blizzard, from the 23rd to the 26th; parts of north Hampshire and Berkshire recorded 69 cm, or 27 inches, of snow. Southampton was hit by 37cm, or 14½ inches. As well as the heavy snowfall, night-time temperatures dropped below -12 °C in the north of England and Scotland. All of this, understandably, caused huge disruption across the country, particularly the south; in Southampton and Portsmouth, telegraph and telephone lines were down, roads, rail lines and tramways blocked, and shops and factories forced to close. On the a ernoon of 25th April, the cruiser HMS Gladiator was caught in a snow squall in the Solent, and was struck amidships by the American liner, SS Saint Paul. Badly damaged and beginning to sink, the captain of Gladiator attempted to run her ashore. However, she was caught broadside by the blizzard, turned over and sank just west of Yarmouth, with the loss of 28 lives. ough damaged, Saint Paul was able to return to Southampton. Elsewhere, many other ships were delayed from reaching port, diverted, or prevented from leaving, by the gales. By the 27th, much milder weather moved in, bringing a further problem – extensive ooding, as the snow melted. Fawley and Ashlett had received their fair share of snow, as Mudge’s rst photo shows. e following week, presumably aided by spring tides and low atmospheric pressure, the creek and marshes to the south were completely inundated. e winter certainly had a nasty sting in its tail. On this occasion the chosen charity was the Milford-on-Sea Primary School PFA’s early reading project who provided an excellent range of refreshments. What better way to encapsulate a winter theme than with Grieg’s ‘Peer Gynt Suite No.1’. e concert started with the melodious and enchanting tunes of ‘Morning’, depicting an early morning in the Norwegian mountains and forests. e next movement was the somewhat mournful ‘ e Death of Ase’, however, the following ‘Anitra’s Dance’ brightened the mood considerably which led nicely into the fast and furious nale of ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’. Next, the wind and brass sections of the orchestra gave an excellent rendition of ‘Serenade in E Flat Major’ by Richard Strauss. e rst half of the concert concluded with the orchestra’s strings playing the ‘Capriol Suite’ by Warlock. e second half got under way with a reminder of the concert’s winter theme provided by Proko ev’s ‘Troike’ from the ‘Lieutenant Kije Suite’. is was followed by a most enjoyable performance of the ‘Rosamunde Overture’ by Schubert. Final images of winter were conjured up by Delius’s ‘Sleigh Ride’ and Elgar’s ‘ ree Bavarian Dances’ the last of which provided the most appreciative audience with a lively conclusion. By way of an encore the a ernoon finished with ‘Lymington Quay’ composed by the orchestra’s very own Tony Kitcherside. e Solent Concert Orchestra’s next performance is at Chandler’s Ford Methodist Church at 3pm on Saturday 11th March. Further details can be found at: www.solentconcertorchestra. org.uk The Temperature is Rising at QE2 Hall The temperature is rising in the QE2 Hall in Black eld, thanks to the installation of a new heating system, fully funded by Fawley Parish Council. e new heating was urgently needed, as the previous heating system was beyond repair. e new infrared heaters provide energy e cient heating for the building and have greatly improved the warmth of the space. Groups who regularly use the hall have been really pleased with the outcome. In the future the Council is hoping to link the heaters to solar panels to reduce the carbon footprint of the building.
