SPORT IN THE HERALD Fawley RFC U14’s Secure Place in the Hampshire Shield Final e Fawley RFC U14’s took to the 3G Astro pitch at US Portsmouth at the start of February for the Hampshire Shield semi- nal. e U14s team had been working hard during training sessions at Fawley RFC leading up to the semi- nal and were looking forward to experimenting with some set plays that the team had practiced during their Wednesday night training sessions. It was a cold crisp 10.30am kick o at US Portsmouth, the team were excited and kicked o to the opposition. US Portsmouth gathered the ball and ran into a well organised defensive line of players which quickly turned the ball over and started to pass the ball across the pitch. is opened gaps up in the US Portsmouth back line; Fawley RFC U14s broke the game line to score in the corner within the rst ve minutes of the start whistle. is was followed by ve other tries in the rst half, three of which were converted by the Fullback.  e score at half time was 36-0 to Fawley RFC. The second half saw US Portsmouth come out with real purpose and a new game plan for the second half to try and break down the Fawley heads up rugby approach to the game. e Fawley RFC team repelled attack a er attack in their own 22 area of the pitch.  is allowed them to break free with some outstanding examples of attacking rugby to score in the US Portsmouth end a further ve times in the second half. e nal score ended Fawley RFC 69 points to US Portsmouth 0 points. The U14’s team faced Gosport & Fareham RFC in the nal of the Hampshire Shield at the end of February. Bramshott Hill Ladies Face the Yellow Peril e annual Yellow Peril fun team game provided a very close-run match, with the winners and second place decided by count back. Yellow Peril: Winning team - A. Jones, V.Boot & L.Bell (102 points); 2nd place - L.Dunkason, S.Rothwell, D.Nicholson (102 points); 3rd place - S.Lewis, P.Colmer, G.Gordon (100 points). 9 Hole Short Course: Winner – M. Webb, 2nd P. Greenham, 3rd N. Lowman (58 points) Not to be outdone by the weather the ladies have also played a fun “3 clubs and a putter” competition with some very close scores. Division 1: Winner – L. Dunkason (17 points), 2nd H. Bell (16 points), 3rd J.Howells (16 points); Division 2: Winner – A. Jones (13 points), 2nd C. Davis (11 points), 3rd V. Boot (11 points). On the 9 hole Short Course: Winner - P. Hedges (21 points), 2nd J. Walker (20 points), 3rd C. Jones (20 points). Qualifying matches have not yet resumed due to the weather and course conditions. e match in February was therefore a nonqualifying Stableford. Division 1: Winner – M. Tennant (35 points), 2nd J. Howells (33 points); Division 2: Winner – J. Physick (32 points), 2nd V. Boot (32 points); Division 3: Winner – G. Gordon (34 points), 2nd L. Bell (32 points). On the 9 hole short course: Winner – N. Lowman (18 points), 2nd P.Greenham (18 points), 3rd C. Boiling (17 points). Bramshott Hill Seniors Results Monday 13th February and as the cold weather recedes golf courses are getting back to normal. is is true of Dibden Golf Course, with the excellent work carried out by the ground sta the course is once again fully open. On Monday 13th Bramshott Hill Seniors played a team game of “Yellow Peril”. Teams of three players rotate the yellow ball between all three players. e team score must include the yellow ball score plus one of the other two scores. is is a non-qualifying fun game and some extremely good scores were returned. e results were; First with 121 points - Paul Wastell, Jeff Andrews and Graham Blomfield. Second with 117 points - Ian Blandford, Barry Walker and Ron Smith. ird with 115 points - John Brooks, Kevin Rothwell and Richard Short. FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO NATIONAL FINALS Waterside Short Mat Bowls Club have recently started playing at their new venue, e QEII Pavilion Black eld a er the ESSO Sports and Social Club was closed down in 2016. ey had to start from scratch, slowly they have built up a sizable membership. Not having many other clubs to play against, in 2022 the club decided to obtain a liation to the Hampshire County Short Mat Bowls Association and the English Short Mat Bowling Association. is gave the club access to play against other clubs, in a larger area. Entering National Qualifying Competitions, they have met other club players, county players and even national players - they are good! In September they sent 4 players to play in the National Qualifying Mixed Fours, Riverside Indoor Bowls Club, Winchester. ey managed to win 3rd place in a play-o and were selected to play in National Mixed Fours nals on 25th February at Solihull Indoor Bowls Club. So, from humble beginnings to putting the club on the map e club is open Monday: 2pm to 4pm Roll Up, Wednesday: 10am to 12pm Roll Up, Friday: 7pm to 9pm Roll Up in the summer and in-house league in the winter.
