Brought to you by the National Trust, supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery and run by thousands of local organisations and volunteers, HODs brings people together to celebrate their heritage, community and history. Here is a roundup of some of the free events taking place in the local area: Hampshire Scout Heritage Centre Ferny Cro s, SO42 7YQ Take the opportunity to visit the Heritage Centre on this otherwise private site and gain an insight into the origins and activities of the Scout movement in Hampshire (and beyond) through the years. View the large collection of artefacts, uniforms, badges, camp re blankets and more. Ballard School Open Day Ballard School, Fernhill Lane, New Milton, Hampshire, BH25 5SU Ballard school opens its doors to its 34 acre estate. e main Ballard School building was built as a country residence for the Ubsdell family in the early 1900s and still has many typical period features from the day. Pre-booking is preferred Old Southampton Cemetery: A Titanic tour! Old Southampton Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Southampton, Hampshire, SO15 7AF Take a tour around Old Southampton Cemetery and discover the impact the sinking of the Titanic had on Southampton. See the many graves and hear their stories, including that of the lifeboat crew who saved the Countess of Rothes. Pre-booking is required Romsey Signal Box Romsey Signal Box, Brick Lane, Romsey, Hampshire, SO51 8LG Romsey Signal Box has been preserved and restored to full operational order. Visitors are encouraged to see the signal box in operation. People of all ages and interests are encouraged to attend, including accompanied children. e signal box was closed in 1982 but has since been restored to full working order, with connections to signals and a point outside. Visitors are normally encouraged to pull the levers and see things happening. On Saturday 16th September they will be open for simple demonstrations of the workings of the signal box. On Sunday 17th September the signal box will be operated in full to a real-time train timetable. ey also have a miniature working signal box demonstration based on the Cowley Bridge Junction signal box, which visitors are welcome to observe. Other artefacts and items of interest are spread around the site, including a small garden railway and a small discovery centre. e site has been attractively landscaped. Tours will be led by sta and alumni of the school who have particular interest in the Great Ballard Estate, the Ubsdell family and local history. e dedicated Heritage Room includes plaques and photographs depicting the journey of Ballard from a country estate to a modern, thriving school. ey would love to welcome you to unlock Ballard’s many hidden treasures.
