In the spring Minstead Trust held an open day at the Charity’s Hanger Farm Arts Centre in Totton, where people supported by the Trust showed o their latest cra skills in felting, developed by sta cra er Megan. Felting involves the teasing, carding and twisting of alpaca, merino and other sheep wool into hanks. e products they had on display included hearts which they had produced and stitched together by use of a barbed needle and then lled with rice and lavender. ey had also made felt sheep faced balls for use in tumble dryers, as well as lovely balls for exercising hands and ngers, and cushions covered with beautifully so hanks of wool.  e products had all been handmade by Jonathan on teasing, Caitlin on carding, Lisa on twine production and Philip on lavender heart production. At the time Caitlin said that although she loves doing the hand carding, she would really like a drum carder which could really speed up the production. Megan their felting instructor con rmed that the Trust visiting Furzey Gardens, where in the tea room sales area there are products produced by the cra ers and woodworkers, and soon to be joined by ceramics made with local clay. Items sell quickly and so be sure to purchase when you visit the tea rooms or go around the garden. Minstead Trust is a local charity, based at Minstead Lodge in the New Forest. e Trust also supports people with learning disabilities in Dorset and along the coast in Portsmouth, helping them to gain skills and con dence and to be as independent as possible. The horticultural expertise of the people supported by the Trust is well known by anyone was hoping to be able to purchase a drum carder, and these comments were picked up by New Forest Rotarians who subsequently agreed to fund a new drum carder. is is now in full working order and capable of not only considerably speeding up production, it produces a beautiful open mat of wool for further yarn production.
