Steve Duckett and Charlie Winners of the pairs aggregate cup Left to Right: John Pickering and Ken Scott SENIORS CAPTAIN’S DAY Yet another bright and sunny day attracted 57 New Forest Golf Club Seniors on this year’s Captains Day for a pairs Pinehurst/Chapman competition on Thursday 20th July. In this format, both players in a team tee o , play each other’s ball for their second shot then choose the better ball to play alternately for the rest of the hole. Vice-Captain Harry Maitland had graciously dropped out to leave an even number in the competition, so he and Captain Hugh Marchant played an impromptu Captain vs Vice Captain match over 8 holes which Harry won 2&1 and held an uno cial nearest the pin competition using putters o the 13th tee which Hugh won! Competition in the main event meanwhile was intense with nearly every pair scoring under par and the top two pairs both 13 under, 1st prize winners Colin Chatten (left) and Ray Kelly (right) with New Forest Golf Club Seniors Captain Hugh Marchant (centre) contributions throughout his captaincy and in a surprise twist, everyone who turned up were winners sharing the bulk of the prize pot in recognition of the support they have given Captain Hugh Marchant and the Honeypot Children’s charity. for nearest the pin on holes: 2 – Pete Ayers, 6 – John Ireland, 8 – Steve Duckett, 11 – Charlie Hughes, 13 – Richard Hammond, 14 – Steve Waterman, 16 – Ian Coundon, 18 in two – Chris Angell & Dave Barrett plus nearest the line on 17 – Charlie Tabor. A few special prizes were awarded to Seniors who in the Captain’s view had made special or unusual resulting in back 9 countback to decide positions: 1st Colin Chatten & Ray Kelly 56 nett (back 9=24), 2nd Mike Cavaney & Jim Worsley 56 nett (back 9=27), 3rd Mike Broom & Ted Groves 57 nett, 4th Chris Angell & Dave Barrett 58 nett. Prizes were awarded Hughes ended well ahead of most of the opposition but ultimately were no match for Ken Scott and John Pickering especially as John finished with an excellent score of 45 points. 1st Ken Scott and John Pickering 81 pts, 2nd Steve Duckett and Charlie Hughes 79 pts, 3rd Brian Roberts and Laurie Burn 74 pts.
