Based in Hythe, e Kisoboka Trust was established twenty years ago, aiming to bring safe drinking water to villages in Uganda and Sierra Leonne. Orchard have been supporting the charity for a number of years as part of their cross curricular learning topic called ‘Water for All?’. Alongside learning about the charity, the children have been busy writing lea ets about the life-changing work carried out and how they could help. their informative lea ets home to share with family and friends. Whilst the money is still being counted, sta have been incredibly impressed by the children’s sense of empathy and desire to donate their own money to this cause. ey will be visited in the coming months by a representative from the charity to hand over their donation. After the walk Joey and Tommy, counting their donations On Friday 20th October, all ninety pupils took part in their own ‘Water Walk’ around the school eld. ey had had to carefully collect and carry precious water, in a range of containers, from the source to the collection point. What they didn’t know was that their teachers had pierced holes in some of the containers to re ect the fact that Water Walks in Africa are not straight forward. e children had been busy collecting cups of coins over the previous week to donate to the charity, taking Head of Year 5, Jo Fenton, said, “It has been really impressive to see the children want to make a difference to the lives of families in Uganda. They were shocked and saddened by the fact that, each day, over 800 children across the world die from drinking from dirty water sources. They wanted to make a difference and were enthused by the whole project.” Volunteers Step in to Help Repair Paths at Healthy Haven On Saturday 7th October, extra volunteers stepped in to help repair the paths at the Healthy Haven Garden behind the Waterside Medical Practice. A er Christine put a message asking for help on Facebook, they were totally overwhelmed by the response, with additional support on the day coming from Terry, Cath, Steve, Shaun, Lewis and Pam who volunteered their time along with three of the Healthy Haven’s own volunteers Helen, Sue and Chris. Gillian their o cial photographer also attended. ree tonnes of hogging were wheelbarrowed into the garden, and Lewis used a whacker plate to compact it. A total of 12 tonnes of hogging was used to repair the paths, which was supplied by Andrew Kitcher along with the whacker plate. Cath’s children were able to sit on the children’s safari bench whilst the work was being completed. When the work was nished they all enjoyed tea, squash and cakes and had a good chat. e public now have some decent paths to walk around when visiting the garden.
