A particular highlight was the diary of one Joan Coombes who observed the oak tree outside her house for 76 years, dying last year at the age of 96! The next information/discussion session is on 8th January at Hythe Community Centre 7pm to 9pm, looking at ‘Regenerative Culturewhat does it mean and how can the Waterside embrace it?’ led by Lucie Mann. Lucie is the Regenerative Culture lead at New Forest Aquaponics CIC, and she will be exploring the concept of regenerative culture in this talk. Please bring your own thoughts and ideas about what you think this means and the changes you would like to see in the culture of the Waterside. New Forest Aquaponics CIC run many projects in the Waterside area and this will also be an opportunity to nd out more about them and understand how they all link together. Community Energy: WaterCAN has been working with similar organisations across the New Forest with the support of Community Energy South, with the aim of forming Community Energy New Forest in order to provide local renewable energy for local people. We are linking with West Solent Solar Cooperative, who have been operating a 2.4 MW solar farm in Pennington since 2014 and have o ered their experience and expertise to help us. If anyone has ideas about suitable locations, buildings or land, or is interested in joining us in this project, please contact us. Water: Recent problems with our water supply in the Waterside area have focussed attention on the importance of the availability of water, which we o en take for granted. A recent email from Southern Water to customers highlighted the fact that the South East is “water stressed”, and suggested water saving measures. However, the emergency prompted us to explore options for water storage. While household water butts o er capabilities ranging from 100 to 220 litres at a cost of £69- £80, a more cost-e ective and larger alternative is the IBC tank. ese 1000 litre containers, originally used for commercial transport of food liquids, can be acquired second-hand on platforms such as eBay, Gumtree, or local magazines for a reasonable price, typically between £60 to £80 each, inclusive of delivery. In keeping with the name of the area, several enterprising local residents were seen pulling buckets of water from the sea to use for toilet ushing! At a local level for example ‘Cards for all Occasions’ sells eco-friendly fragrances and compostable money boxes for children. And nally, returning to the subject of grey water, the Dutch are increasingly seeing sewage waste as a reliable heat source upgraded with heat pumps, according to scientists in Amsterdam. No doubt they’re hoping to come up smelling of tulips! HYTHE & DISTRICT VOLUNTARY CAR GROUP e Hythe & District Voluntary Car Group is a voluntary service that was set up many years ago to help support people living in Hythe and surrounding areas who experience difficulty attending visits to the hospitals and medical appointments. e service is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who wish to help their community. However now many of the Committee are now reluctantly having to step back from the Committee, and they would like to welcome any new members to join their happy team. Many people have been able to attend their appointments due to the organisational skills and kindness of their committee and volunteer drivers. Over the years the service has taken thousands of local residents to and from hospitals and dental appointments at a reasonable cost. eir dedicated drivers give up their time and use their own cars to provide this transport. e journeys are covered by their group insurance and they receive a mileage allowance for the journeys made. To enable the service to continue they would welcome community minded people who have some spare time to volunteer to join them either with admin tasks or driving.
