Seniors Captain Hugh Marchant nominated Honeypot as his Captain’s charity for the year, having learnt about their work supporting young carers from his wife, who had visited Honeypot House a er fundraising for the Charity along with her quilting group. Money has been raised by the Senior golfers and donated throughout the year to tie in with Honeypot’s matched funding campaigns, doubling their donations with a total of £8,006.56 received by the Charity. Some of the money was raised by golfers having to pay involuntary donations for ending up in the Captains Bunker and losing control of their golf trolley! Other money donated was raised through the annual Captain’s Charity Day. is year they sold mulligans and held a ra e and auction, with £800 collected on that day alone. The final cheque of £1,342.50 plus £70 cash was donated to Viv Carter from Honeypot Children’s Charity, when she visited the New Forest Golf Club recently. Viv explained to the golfers that the money they have raised is enough to fund: • A 3-day/2-night residential respite break for 10 young carers at the beautiful 7 acre Honeypot House in the New Forest. e children will bounce on the trampolines, swing on the swings, whizz around on bikes and go karts, get creative in their art studio, play with the Lego, train tracks and games, laugh (a lot!), sleep (a bit!), eat yummy food that they haven’t had to prepare for themselves and generally have a super time simply being children. • Taking 12 children on a Memory Making Day out between their annual respite breaks, to a theme park to ride a rollercoaster for the rst time or tour a football stadium or a day on the beach building sandcastles, having a picnic and being with friends. • A Wellbeing grant for six young carers from deprived backgrounds to buy life essential items to support them at home (like replacing a broken washing machine so they don’t need to hand wash clothes or buying school shoes/coat/backpack etc) Hugh comments: “My wife Carol initially put me onto Honeypot. Her quilting group chose Honeypot as their charity a few years back and she had visited Honeypot House at that time to see the work they do. At the same time, I was seeing reports of the high numbers of young carers there are thought to be in the UK and the fact that they get little or no support from statutory bodies. It just seemed to me such a worthy charity with local roots and clearly our Seniors Section agreed considering the way they have dug deep throughout the year. Viv showed my wife and I around Honeypot House on a day when a group of children were having a respite break so we saw at first hand the joy that those young carers showed at being able to be themselves for a while. I am in awe at the generosity that our Seniors have shown particularly at this time of austerity and rising inflation. They are truly magnificent – as is Honeypot. I am just delighted to have been able to act as a conduit from one to the other.” Viv comments: “Honeypot started here in the New Left to Right: Viv Carter and Hugh Marchant at Honeypot House with a cheque demonstrating the full amount benefitting Honeypot across the entire year Continued on page 5

Chris Balcombe from Dibden Purlieu took two of his Daleks to the recording in South Wales, including what is thought to be the oldest surviving BBC Dalek prop. Show host Eric Knowles grabbed his scarf and sonic screwdriver to present the special episode that was broadcast on BBC1 on 23rd November at 12.15pm - exactly 60 years to the day since the rst episode of Doctor Who was screened. During the episode Eric is pursued by Chris, operating and voicing one of his Daleks, and has to take refuge in a Tardis - the Doctor’s time-travelling machine. e two antiques experts helping the teams are Richard Madley and Kate Bliss, both dressed as two well-known Doctors. Eric later interviewed prop-collector Chris, who has a variety of original Doctor Who props, some of which date back to the show’s very early days - including alien out ts, robot masks and of course the dreaded Daleks, of which he has three. “After a very long, early morning drive from my home to Llanelli in pouring rain, it was a fun weekend of filming,” said Chris, 63, a semi-retired professional photographer and videographer. “Although the interview with my props nearly didn’t happen, as we had to get the two Daleks through two parish hall doorways that hadn’t been measured correctly beforehand. But with some careful lifting and pushing, they just squeezed through. Original studio Daleks weren’t built to have their base and skirt sections dismantled - everything is firmly joined together,” he added. The middle section of my original Dalek is from what’s thought to be the very first Dalek built back in 1963. The skirt section - covered in hemispheres - is from another Dalek made for the show in 1965. There isn’t enough space inside for me to operate that one, so I took along my replica 1970’s Dalek, which starred in a TV and film advert for KitKat back in 2001. Climbing in and pushing it along with my feet wasn’t as easy as I remember it!” he said. “I have a voice modulator and microphone so the crackling Dalek voice I barked out was recorded live, as I glided after Eric.” Chris also took along his original 1970’s ‘Voc Robot’ head and tunic, worn in one of the classic series’ most watched stories ‘ e Robots Of Death’ with Tom Baker playing the eponymous Timelord. An original Cyberman out t and armour also feature on the show. “As Eric Knowles was dressed as the 7th Doctor - Sylvester McCoy, I lent him my ‘Question Mark’ umbrella Eric Knowles, right, with Chris on location, after Chris chased the Bargain Hunt host in his replica 1970’s Dalek, which he also provided the voice for who rst came to fame on ‘ e Antiques Roadshow’ back in the early 1980’s, said: “Having watched the first episode of Doctor Who as a 10-year-old in 1963, it’s great to be celebrating Doctor Who’s anniversary on Bargain Hunt and sharing the love of this beloved programme with two teams of super fans. Over its long life, treasures of all kinds based on the series can be found, making it the perfect theme for a special episode”. e Doctor Who Bargain Hunt is available on BBC iPlayer. to complete the look, plus a ‘sonic screwdriver’.” comments Chris. Ocean Harmony is a member of the British Association of Barbershop Singers (BABS) and was launched by a handful of singers in 2003. Since then the choir has been producing some wonderful sounds during weekly rehearsals at Colbury Memorial Hall, Ashurst. Bass singer Paul Keeping, who also sings baritone, was present on the rst evening and is delighted the chorus is still in full voice 20 years on. “I had sung in my younger days,” he said. “But that was a long time ago. I remember my first impressions were of a friendly, supportive group who enjoyed singing and I quickly got hooked on the barbershop sounds with their ringing chords. Now, 20 years on, I am still singing!” added Paul who has also been chorus director and taken on just about every role other than treasurer. Ocean Harmony, which was declared the Most Improved Barbershop Chorus in the UK in 2017, is a registered charity and the evening will raise vital funds for the Solent Mind New Forest Well-Being Centre based in Hythe. Over the past decade, this volunteer programme has ourished, now with over y volunteers generously giving a few hours a week. In 2013 it was identi ed that many of Oakhaven’s patients were su ering from loneliness and isolation at home. Sometimes people facing end of life can feel lonely even when there are family members and carers around. Forming a friendship with someone outside of their illness can make a huge di erence to a person’s well-being. Oakhaven Neighbours was created in response to this need; a team of trained volunteers now each generously give several hours a week to support people in their own homes. e ‘Neighbours’ help with everyday tasks that can sometimes seem overwhelming; going out for a chat over co ee or sometimes sitting with them so that their carer can get out for a much-needed break safe in the knowledge that their loved one is in capable hands. In just the last year alone, Neighbours have supported 120 people across the New Forest, Totton and Waterside areas and given a total of 4,400 hours! e amazing di erence is evident in eresa’s story, she became a Neighbour to a lady who hadn’t le her at for six years. As eresa said: “I took my lady out in a wheelchair lent by Oakhaven; it was the first time she had been out in six years, except for to rights over a coffee and bacon and egg sandwich in a local cafe. It is a very valuable, worthwhile use of free time, developing friendships with people with different or very interesting life histories; I so love a good chat.” Volunteer and be a part of something special! A friendly team of volunteers, Oakhaven Neighbours welcome new volunteers throughout the year. Full training is provided, along with ongoing support. Become an Oakhaven Neighbour and you’ll make a real di erence to the quality of someone’s life and be a part of a dedicated and valued team. If you have a little time to pop in and visit someone locally, Oakhaven would love to hear from you. To nd out more about the scheme and becoming an Oakhaven Neighbour, please contact Sara at neighbours@oakhavenhospice.co.uk leaving a contact telephone number. A group of Oakhaven Neighbours volunteers in the garden at Oakhaven Hospice within an ambulance! We went for a stroll around her neighbourhood; she absolutely loved it and was so happy feeling the breeze on her cheeks! I left a happy lady, and we look forward to going further afield next time”. Another Oakhaven Neighbour explained: “Being a hospice neighbour is so varied and enjoyable. It’s humbling to know how much giving up a small amount of time to support others can mean to them, whether it be doing their shopping, taking them shopping, gardening, walking the dog, going out for a drive around the New Forest or to a garden centre or setting the world New Forest Acting Up is a new programme supported by Culture in Common that is bringing drama, music, magic, lm and Christmas shows to six community venues across the New Forest. The team at Steff’s Kitchen in Fairweather’s Garden Centre were quite shocked when they came into work and found Santa’s little elf sound asleep on a swinging chair. Covered in a blanket with mu n all over her face, it looked like the naughty elf stood up to her mischievous reputation, helping herself to cake, crisps, marshmallows and a bottle of wine. Marie Brown the Front of House Manager said that whilst turning on all the lights, unlocking and getting set-up for the day, she could hear a strange noise that sounded like snoring! Creeping over to where the sound came from she was amazed to see the elf asleep who had obviously made herself comfortable.
