It was a busy end of year for WaterCAN members, and 2024’s events start on 8th January 7pm at Hythe Community Centre, when Lucie Mann, regenerative culture lead at New Forest Aquaponics CIC, will be sharing her thoughts and ideas and hopefully yours too, on how to develop a regenerative culture on the Waterside. On the 12th February, 7pm at Hythe Community Centre, Philip omas from the Waterside Cycling Action Group (WCAG) will be discussing “Active Travel”, and the health and environmental bene ts of reducing car travel. the 19th November, collecting 18 bags of rubbish in the process and preparing the town centre for the Mistletoe Fayre. Community Energy: work progresses with our partner groups across the New Forest, and with Community Energy South. WaterCAN reps will be meeting with Hythe and Dibden Parish Council Climate Change Committee on the 17th January to discuss the way forward. At the Mistletoe Fayre, WaterCAN combined with Surfers Against Sewage. Lee Attrill and Mark Hansard-Short will be speaking at a WaterCAN open session in April, so watch this space! If you can’t wait that long, visit their website and read their 2023 report on water quality. e stall attracted a large number of visitors, many of whom took part in the ideas for environmental protection competition. A wide range of suggestions resulted - see our website - can you spot your idea? e winners were Hana and Alba, who suggested buying environmentally friendly Christmas presents: bulbs to plant and a bug hotel kit. Thanks to everyone who took part and shared in the discussions and ideas. We look forward to an even busier 2024. Both sessions are open to everyone, all welcome. WaterCAN members joined New Forest Friends of the Earth at a “United for Warmer Homes” event on 18th November, meeting with local MPs Sir Desmond Shayne and Sir Julian Lewis to argue the case for a stronger approach for measures to improve home insulation and heat retention. ey helped produce a spectacular technicolour quilt to mark the occasion, which will hopefully be displayed at Hythe Library in the near future. Several members joined a Tidy up Hythe team on Philip’s early career began in the building trade before he moved to Eastleigh College as a lecturer on e Built Environment. He has an MSc in Environmental Change, and has been a keen advocate of environmental protection and active The Ampfield Market (Est. 2000) e Market is always held on the first Saturday of the month excluding January and August which are holiday months. It takes place in Amp eld Village Hall (SO51 9BJ), between 10am and 12noon. Parking and admission are free. e Market has become a very popular meeting place, o ering the best value, most delicious refreshments in Hampshire! Every e ort is made to keep the sales tables lively and interesting. ere are top quality, locally sourced items for sale including cakes, biscuits, savoury generously volunteer their time and baking skills to provide a delicious seasonal selection of cakes every month, which are served with co ee throughout the morning. e next Amp eld Market will take place on Saturday 3rd February between 10am and 12noon. They order their fruit and veg from Hansards a very reputable local supplier and they endeavour to sell a good variety of fresh, seasonal produce every month. ey are delighted to announce that Matt’s Bakery in Chandlers Ford is now supplying their bread each month. e Market generates almost £2,000 a year towards Village Hall funds. e Market team Do you need help in understanding how to use your smartphone, tablet or laptop? Drop-in sessions run by Digital Champions are available every Monday 11am to 12noon and Wednesday 10am to 11am in Hythe Library. Sessions are also held in libraries in Lymington, Tuesdays 2pm to 3pm; Fordingbridge, Wednesdays 9.30am to 10.30am and Ringwood Wednesdays 10am to 12noon and New Milton Thursdays 10am to 12noon. e sessions are run by experienced IT specialists who can provide assistance ranging from basic use and understanding of the library computers or your own smartphone to resolving slow systems and security advice. is is a free service provided by volunteers of Citizens Advice New Forest.
