Nigel and Katie were delighted with the award: “We’re thrilled that our work has been recognised. Over the course of the past 12 months we have produced bespoke and innovative visitor material, including a map highlighting an accessible Southampton route ‘From Parks to Port’ which is both a downloadable map and a printed, coloured foldable map. We offer descriptions in Word which can be read out loud by OCR (Optical Character Recognition) for the visually impaired, and translated (using translation Apps) into other languages. Judges were impressed with how we’d developed the material using state-of-the-art technology.” Fran Downton, Chief Executive of Tourism South East, said “We could not be prouder of all our wonderful finalists at this year’s Beautiful South Awards. They have all worked incredibly hard throughout 2023 and it is our pleasure to reward and recognise the high standards. They set our region amongst the best in the country.” Set up in 2015, SEE Southampton operate regular guided walks across the City Centre, visiting the medieval vaults and towers not usually accessible to the public. In addition, SEE Southampton prepare weekly heritage themed articles for the Echo; run an extremely popular Facebook page crammed full of local stories and pictures; stage a series of free to enter talks at local libraries; open up Westgate Tower for visits to its May ower exhibition and run a Cruise Welcome Desk at the Docks. All of this is achieved through a team of enthusiastic volunteers. ere was a great turn out for the annual Waterside Woodcarvers Christmas social at St Andrews. Aside from the brain-teasing quiz, mystery ra e, sales of tools and timber and a superb bu et, entertainment included an axe-throwing competition (plastic ones for everyone’s safety) and the great reveal of the annual wood block challenge. is year the theme chosen was ‘In the Garden’. e overall standard of carvings was incredibly high and it is always fun to see the inventiveness of the members, when everyone starts with the same size piece of wood. You might have expected a bbq or pizza oven, bench or garden swing but no: the majority of entries were of garden wildlife. ere were bird baths, birds and nests, a mouse, a (giant) lady bird, a pot of da odils and a stylised holly leaf. In the mix was also a life-size pair of secateurs, a selection of tools leaning against a wall and a garden shed complete with gardener and lawnmower. e winner in the experienced category was Maggie Port with a very realistic and delicate sprig of bramble with blackberries – so much so that some thought at rst it was a bought-in table decoration! e novice category was won by Andy McCa rey with a woodpecker feeding its young in a tree hole. Many of these will probably be on display at the club’s annual exhibition in August. Now everyone will be dreaming up ideas for the 2024 theme, to be decided at the March social. e club continues to meet fortnightly on ursday evenings at Noadswood School. Depending on the level of intellectual disability or difficulty, the experiences of feeling water from fountains on your skin, admiring the Parks colourful ‘pond’ mosaic, smelling the wisteria and other flowers, and listening to the birds chirping away, are all part of this tour. We also include images / visuals. It’s a green and sustainable walk, and requires no transport. Mobility scooters, wheelchairs, walkers, and baby prams are welcomed. The walk starts and ends near bus stops, car parks, and taxi ranks and is readily accessible.”
