Adrian said: “When I started looking into getting a defibrillator, there was a national campaign promoting heart health awareness. It feels as though there isn’t as much profile about the importance of keeping your heart healthy as there is around some other diseases. For instance, there is more knowledge and understanding about cancer, but very few people realise how quickly an unhealthy heart can deteriorate and, in some cases, how it can be fatal.” Adrian soon got many of the pub’s locals involved with fundraising. Barmaid Sarah Robinson arranged an event to start raising the money required. Sarah booked a band, with the cost being covered by a local sponsor, and she arranged to have a BBQ in the pub garden. Adrian continued: “The best part was seeing everyone come together. One pub regular cut all his shoulderlength hair off which raised an amazing £600. Incredible!” e de brillator has now been installed and placed on the wall outside of the pub, so it’s accessible to all the community. New Forest District Councillor Neville Penman, who attended the unveiling of the de brillator, said: “I’ve been asked by a number of residents if we could get more defibrillators installed in the area. There is one already, but it’s inside the community centre, which is locked daily at 4pm and not accessible 24 hours a day, which isn’t very helpful in the event of an emergency. The pub has had its defibrillator installed outside, so it is easily accessible for those in need.” Raising awareness surrounding heart health is cardiac charity, Heartbeat. Community Fundraising and Marketing Manager Tanya Harder came across the fundraiser on Facebook and reached out. Tanya said: “Here at Heartbeat, we support patients who have a heart condition by helping to fundraise against pioneering projects to help improve heart health. This support extends to their families as well as some travel from a far.” A key area for Tanya within her role is to help raise awareness, and supporting the community with their e orts to help save lives. “We couldn’t be more proud to have helped the New Inn community with their efforts and to be able to present them with their defibrillator. What some people might not realise is the speed with which an unhealthy heart could prove fatal, and here at Heartbeat, we’re always here to try to educate people on this.” Tanya continued. e de brillator comes with training and a guide manual as to how to use it. If you’d like to learn more or access de brillator training, please visit www.heartbeat.co.uk Unveiling of the defibrillator at the New Inn Jumble Sale Brockenhurst Royal British Legion are holding a Jumble Sale on Saturday 10th February, 10am at the Village Hall, Highwood Road, Brockenhurst, SO42 7RY. Having heard where the money from the sale was destined, the new owner of the re engine kindly rounded up the amount and Phil was able to donate £100 to Janis Bevis for her to put towards the upkeep of the animals. Barry was himself a retained part time reman for over 26 years in Hythe, so the sale of the model re engine to help keep alive the farm he started over 50 years ago is a tting tribute. Model ‘Totton Fire Brigade’ fire engine auctioned off for Barry’s Farm Passenger numbers on the Hythe Ferry rose by 22% in 2023, an increase of over 25,000 against the footfall in 2022. Only two months showed a small decrease, October and December. FERRY PASSENGER NUMBERS UP (Photo: Alan Titheridge) e tra c chaos at the Redbridge Causeway early in the year undoubtedly contributed but commuter tra c increased throughout. It is hoped that the ferry, now under new ownership, will continue to not only retain this increased support but attract still further, others to enjoy a stress-free and more environmentally friendly commute. e Hythe Ferry, threatened with closure in December 2022, continues to demonstrate its value and important place in the local transport network. Young Lives vs Cancer works to ease the many hardships faced by children and young people with cancer and their families. Liz Blunt, Senior Fundraising Engagement Manger for Young Lives vs Cancer (Hampshire) said: “We are over the moon to be working with the award winning Paultons Park. To receive £15,000 makes such an impact on the support that can be given to children and young people with cancer and their families. We only have our team of Young Lives vs Cancer Social Workers and Jean’s House, our ‘Home from Home’ in Southampton close by to Southampton Hospital thanks to the kindness of companies like Paultons Park.” James Mancey, Operations Director at Paultons Park said: “Playing an active role in our local community is a key pillar in our Paultons Promise and is our commitment to helping to make the world a better place. Over the past 40 years, we have eagerly supported local causes, and I am incredibly proud that we have been able to donate such significant funds to three brilliant charities in Hampshire this year. We chose to expand our charity partnership programme earlier this year to ensure we were supporting causes and organisations of all sizes, and ensure donations are reaching those who need it most.” Earlier this year, Paultons Park expanded its charitable scheme to formally support the Karen Ingram Foundation as its small charity partner and Young Lives vs Cancer as its medium charity partner. e family-owned attraction has supported Southampton Children’s Hospital Charity since 2019, and the organisation remains Paultons Park’s headline charity. To date, Paultons Park has raised over £150,000 for Southampton Children’s Hospital Charity which has been used to refurbish and equip a specialist sensory playroom for patients and create a designated play and activity space within the Children’s Hospital. Paultons Park raises funds for its charity partners throughout the year through a variety of events, activities, and via guest donations. Donation points where visitors can tap to donate are positioned around the attraction, and funds from these are split equally between the three charity partners. Earlier in the year, three members of the Paultons Park marketing team undertook a 15,000 tandem skydive, to raise funds and awareness for Southampton Childrens Hospitals Charity’s crucial work. Amazing kindness and generosity was in abundance when Hythe & Waterside Rotary carried out collections at two local supermarkets on the Waterside. Customers at the Co-op Holbury and Tesco Dibden were very keen to support these collections which took place during the three weekends before Christmas. A total of just under £1,500 was raised, 100% of which will be used to support good causes locally, nationally and internationally. Hythe & Waterside Rotary President, Jim Whitehouse, said: “It is quite amazing that people were able to help us raise such a fantastic amount of money. At a time when we are all having to watch the pennies, the generosity of the local community is staggering. We give sincere thanks to all those who supported us and wish everyone a peaceful 2024”. Sir Charles Burrell of the Knepp Estate, England’s most famous rewilding project, said: “Debbie Tann has been working tirelessly for nature for many years, and being recognised in this way goes some way to thanking her for all of her energy and vision in what can be a very challenging environment. Under her leadership, the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust was one of the first to embrace rewilding as part of their ambitious and exciting strategy, Wilder 2030, and I was very pleased to support their launch event back in 2019.” Craig Bennett, Chief Executive of e Wildlife Trusts, said: “On behalf of everyone across The Wildlife Trusts, I’d like to offer my warm congratulations to Debbie Tann on being awarded an MBE, which is very well deserved. Debbie is a leading light in UK nature recovery who constantly shows innovation, drive, and dedication for positive change. She is at the forefront of expanding and improving wilder areas in densely populated areas, and many of her ideas have been taken up by other organisations and landowners across the country. Debbie’s leadership has been instrumental in Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust’s pioneering work to restore natural processes, which is crucial for helping nature adapt to climate change. She has an incredible vision for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight – one in which farming supports nature recovery, wildlife tourism benefits communities, and people enjoy easy access to green space where they live and work.” Alongside her day job, Debbie has served on a number of Committees, Boards and advisory groups over the past 25 years. My lifelong passion for nature drives my determination to do all I can to protect wildlife and restore it to health. Sadly, the UK has become one of the most nature depleted countries in the world and our biodiversity is in serious trouble, but through the incredible work of my dedicated and passionate team we are helping wildlife to bounce back across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.” Having graduated with a rst-class BSc degree in Environmental Science and then receiving a distinction for her Conservation Masters degree from University College London, Debbie began her career as an ecologist specialising in freshwater habitats, ponds and rivers.
