Ancient Egypt e Southampton Ancient Egypt Society (SAES) will be holding their next meeting over Zoom, commencing at 2pm, on Saturday 17th February for Roland Enmarch: ‘Ex-pats and Vassal Princes: Some Curious International Messengers in the Late 13th Century BC.’ is talk considers the role played by some of Egypt’s Levantine vassals in international diplomacy during the last decades of the Late Bronze Age Near East (the later 1200s BC). Cuneiform sources from the Assyrian outpost at Tell Huwera in northern Syria detail the hospitality that was o ered to foreign delegates such as those conveying Egyptian diplomatic messages to the other ‘great kings’. e close integration of West Semitic language speakers into the Egyptian Levantine communication network is demonstrated by the number of couriers with Semitic names or of Semitic descent, who travelled from Egypt with messages and gi s for Egyptian vassal rulers and garrison commanders. e messengers included a merchant of Amurru and a Sidonian charioteer who may have been engaged in espionage in Assyria on behalf of Egypt. Roland Enmarch is Senior Lecturer in Egyptology at the University of Liverpool, specialising in the written culture of Ancient Egypt. His research interests include Egyptian literature, and Egyptian expeditions and resource procurement. A former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology, his publications include A World Upturned (2008) and Ancient Egyptian Literature: eory and Practice (2013).
