On Saturday 16th March, 7.30pm two unique performances relating to the sea are coming to Hythe and Dibden Parish Hall. Opening the performance, landscape writer, Sarah Acton presents a newly commissioned piece. Weaving ghostly fragments of the south west seine shing heritage alongside atmospheric visuals by Common Ground, Sarah and local guest artist Emily Burridge premiere new poetic and musical work Seiners. Real conversations, records, walks and memory talks form inspiration for this series of sketches. ey remember shing communities, seine boats and everyday life along the coast to link the story of these communities to the wild coastal seasons and cycles of mackerel, salmon and pilchards once shed in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall; where voices and music dri into the memory sea. Taking a silent, black and white 1929 documentary about Britain’s herring shing industry and providing a sound track using electronic sounds and beatboxing seems an unlikely combination but this is exactly what sound artist, nature beatboxer and composer Jason Jason Singh (Credit: Julian Fraser) Battleship Potemkin in 1929, Dri ers follows North Sea herring trawlermen through their dramatic daily routines as well as the industry’s struggles between tradition, modernity, and nature. Originally commissioned by BFI, Jason’s critically acclaimed and totally unique solo score combines live vocal sound e ects, beatboxing techniques and live sampling to create a thrilling cinematic experience. Described as “Amazing! ... Sensory and emotional... Fantastic combination of old and new. Taking the lm to another level” and highly acclaimed by arts correspondent Mark Kermode this is an evening not to be missed.
