28th March 2024 • The HERALD • Page 77 v THE NEXT HERALD IS OUT ON 18TH APRIL v HERALD RECRUITMENT Poets Corner SPRING by Dorothy Lockyer© It really is coming, I’ve seen the signs So, draw back the curtains, pull back the blinds. Look through the cascades of never-ending rain Forget each storm, furnished with its own name. See beyond saturated sodden ground There really are signs that spring is around! Abundance of snowdrops, crocuses too Don’t forget us, as daffs push through! Camelias in full bloom, pink and red Primroses, so do take care where you tread. Hazel and willow with their catkins hung Compete with the spider, her web just spun. So do not despair, the rain will soon stop Then we’ll be saying, it’s ever so hot! Enjoy this season, natures gift to you With a spring in your step a smile peeking through! Southampton Water by Phil Santus© Born to young Mary A child so free He died for us all Aged just thirty-three Mankind didn’t listen Without mercy or care And with little compassion He died for us there As we look back on history We’re filled with the shame Jesus’s life taken He shouldered our blame He accepted our sins All alone on that day Most didn’t show care They just walked away He died on Good Friday Long long ago The pain that he suffered Well, only he knows But arose once again On Easter Sunday And the sins of mankind Were all wiped away He died on Good Friday So far away And so very alone On the cross on that day But he rose on the Sunday We now call Easter day A high price for mans sin For one soul to pay! Heard on The News by David K Wilson© An island discovered And not far away Said the news on the radio I heard just today e newscaster spoke Of warm beaches and seas And lush verdant forests With a hint of light breeze It was hard to believe And so close to our shores All this time undiscovered Golden beaches galore Palm trees a-plenty Where parrots y free Just a trip in a pleasure boat To this jewel in our seas ere are no awful phone masts A great place to be No burgers or ice creams No cars or TV It’s as nature intended Like pure driven snow How long can this last? Its what we all need to know No roads so no tra c And no people living there A paradise from an age past Unblemished without a care I worry for its future For its warm sandy shores Package holidays will beckon With the crowds wanting more I stood preparing my lunch Just tomatoes on toast e radio was still playing As I planned Sundays roast en the newscaster spoke He gave the time day and date He said its noon on All Fools Day And for that island TOO LATE So my beautiful paradise It just slipped away Far below the horizon It lasted half a day? Perhaps just a fantasy Wishful thinking it seems Yet it’s just what we all need An escape to our dreams! And the newscaster spoke Of warm forests and breeze On an undiscovered island Set in warm gentle seas! Live For Today by Jim Dolbear© Yesterdays are coming fast, Soon they will be in the past. e future will soon be gone, With memories to live on. Today’s tomorrow is near, And soon it will disappear. ey will become days gone by, All too soon met with a sigh. So it’s simply up to you, Smile and you will soon get through. Live for the moment that’s best, Life will take care of the rest. The Price Was Paid by David K Wilson© The valley that was gouged by three rivers lies sunken beneath the sea water that drowned it at the ending of the ice age. Humanity’s long summer started then, the deluge marked the beginning. Now the granary store keeps vigil at the confluence of the Itchen and the Test. The shoreline is marked by moorings that bear testament to mankind’s appetite for busy manipulation. The ferries and ocean-going vessels plough the deep water of the double tides in accordance with laws of economics. Each life has reasons which can be measured by rules of supply and demand. Populations of waders and wildfowl inhabit the water’s edge, wherever there is a happy absence of people. They also are beneficiaries of the climate and retreated ice.
