Over the 20 years Jane and her team have raised thousands of pounds for charity organising their annual Macmillan Co ee Mornings and donating prizes to local ra es. Gregory have combined their talents to create a new children’s book called Otter’s Story. Inspired by Simon Cooper’s book e Otters Tale, Jenny made contact with Simon and he invited both her and Gervase to visit the old water mill where he and the otters in his book live. ey walked along the chalk stream and took photos and Gervase sketched, gathering inspiration for the beautiful illustrations in their own book; Otters Story. Gervase was also welcomed to visit New Forest Wildlife Park so that he could observe the behaviour of the Eurasian otters there and draw in real life. He was able to capture the essence of the otter family interacting with each other, snoozing, swimming, shing, playing and clowning around, as otters do! Otters Story tells the story of Otter growing up, from her rst summer of play with her siblings through to the next year when she learns how to look a er herself. Children reading Otters Story will enjoy nding out about Otters adventures growing up and learn all about Eurasian otters along the way! On 1st August, the Hampshire resident joined a team of cyclists in Honeypot’s rst-ever ‘House to House Cycle’, travelling from one of their residential respite houses in the New Forest to their residential respite house in Pen-y-Bryn, Mid Wales. Across four days, the participants cycled through beautiful landscapes and took on treacherous terrain, whilst raising crucial funds for the charity. ey arrived at Honeypot Peny-Bryn on 4th August in the a ernoon to a cheer of young carers with a congratulations banner. 71 year old, Julian said: “I heard about Honeypot Children’s Charity through my long-term friend. He told me about the fantastic work the charity does supporting young carers - who of course need occasional breaks from their never-ending chores. They really are unsung heroes. I enjoyed the physical challenge, but also riding in matched with a little girl called Mia who is 10 and helps her family care for her two older brothers who live with a life limiting condition. They are wheelchair bound and need around the clock care. She recently attended a respite break with Honeypot where she got to do lots of activities, she particularly loves trampolining and arts and crafts. I enjoyed meeting her before the cycle at the House, giving me plenty of encouragement.” Julian was also joined by in uencer Travis Nelson who is famous for cycling everywhere with his cat, Sigrid. With 300k+ followers on Instagram, many of Travis and Sigrid’s fans came out to see the pair along the route to cheer them on. Sir Jim Smith, the President of the Zoological Society of London and philanthropist and long-time supporter of Honeypot, John Pocock also took part. Mr Pocock, from Pulborough, conceived the idea for House to House a er taking on John O’Groats to Lands End for Honeypot in 2022 and raising more than £100,000 together with his son Jamie. He said: “I have experienced firsthand what it’s like to look after a parent who needed a lot of care and attention. The responsibilities and emotional strain was a lot to take on, so I can only imagine what a young carer must be going through on a daily basis! House to House has an important message, we travelled from one of Honeypot’s respite houses to the other, taking on the responsibilities and challenges that come with such a long journey. If these four days gave cyclists just a little insight into the endurance of Honeypot children then they too have walked a mile in their shoes, or more literally, cycled 225 miles. I want to see this event grow year on year to help Honeypot reach more young carers so they too can create happy childhood memories and build brighter futures.” Travis owner of Sigrid stated “It was really nice to come down to Hampshire and see the house, facilities for young carers and learn about what Honeypot do. I rode for young carer Jessica who cares for her Mum, Sigrid was born deaf and certainly appreciates Jessica’s sign language efforts as a young carer!” In 1996, e Honeypot Children’s Charity opened its rst house in Black eld where it now caters for young carers, aged between 5 and 12 years, who places I’ve never ridden in before. I particularly enjoyed the comradery of keeping everyone together and riding as a team. That way the miles flew by!” Before setting o , each cyclist was paired with one of Honeypot’s young carers who are currently looking a er a loved one who is sick or poorly. Its other surviving tractor unit, the oldest surviving such locomotive Brush 16302, has been completely stripped back and is now nearing completion of its renovation, using as many of the original components and as much of the original bodywork as possible. e work has been nanced by Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA) and carried out by volunteers from the Shed (at the Pier) and ferry company engineers. HPHA own the tractors and carriages, leasing the rolling stock to the Hythe and Southampton Ferry Company. 16302 was built in early 1917 for use at a munitions factory in Avonmouth. Just a er the First World War, it was o ered for sale, with others of its type, in a War O ce redundant plant catalogue. en owner of the Hythe Pier and Ferry, omas Percy bought three tractor units for £787.50, bringing them to Hythe with a view to operating a tramway on Hythe’s 2100 feet long Victorian pier. Brush units 16302 and 16307 have operated continuously from July 1922 to this day, the third, Brush 16304 was broken up for spares in 1935. 16307 bears the name, ‘Gerald Yorke’, in honour of the railway engineer who oversaw the laying down of the track and introduction of the tramway. Mr Yorke recommended in 1935 that the tractor units be broken up and replaced by something more modern, but nancial constraints imposed upon Mr Percy by his order for two new ferry boats (Hotspurs II and III) stopped any modernisation. 16302 was named ‘Edward Fort’ prior to Hythe Pier Heritage Association’s Heritage Day on 24th August, in honour of Edward Fort MBE, the present chairman and founder of the Beaulieu Beaufort Foundation. A naming ceremony was performed by Mrs Jo Shields, daughter of Mr Edward Fort. Introducing the special guests for the occasion, HPHA chairman Anthony Smith said: “I am very pleased to welcome to Hythe Pier our special guests, Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and Mr. Robert Gaynor trustees of the Beaulieu Beaufort Foundation and Mrs Jo Shields and family. Currently, Age Concern Hampshire is seeing increased demand for its services, making the call for volunteers more urgent than ever. Ben Carter grew up in Hythe and started his career as a jazz saxophonist by playing for local bands in the area, before studying at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. e 23-year old, who draws inspiration from classic West Coast jazz legends like Art Pepper and Paul Desmond, recently released his rst album ‘Pulsar.’ e album, named a er enormous collapsing stars that emit rhythmic pulses of radiation, is the latest step on a promising career that has already seen him play with famous Jazz musicians such as Phronesis and Laura Jurd. As a teenager, Ben busked in Southampton and at local events such as the rst two Rock e Pier festivals in Hythe, honing his knowledge and love of jazz while raising money for local charities including e Honeypot Children’s Charity. He also played in jazz bands across Hampshire, enjoying performing with Romsey Area Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra at the Turner Sims. In the future, Ben is keen to take his band on tour across the country - but he also wants to bring his music home to some of the concert halls where he rst encountered jazz. “I’d love to play more gigs locally across Hampshire, especially in a concert hall like the Turner Sims that I have a lot of history with, that would be amazing,” he said. “My main goal is for as many people as possible to listen to my music and hopefully enjoy it,” Ben added. Without spending a lot of money or doing much work. Looking back on it now it was surprisingly easy. Although there was a lot of luck involved. I was 69 this year and live alone. About two years ago I had a huge overgrown garden which with only the state pension to nance the work and one pair of hands looked an impossible job as the years passed. My energy levels are slowly diminishing, making the garden an ever more, daunting prospect. Then what looked like the opportunity to make some money came up in the form of a it to provide fresh fruit and vegetables for whoever needed it came from but it’s an incredibly good idea. Lucie found volunteers, organised the donation of compost bins, a garden table and wood chips and made a successful application for a grant to grow fruit trees. e most active of the volunteers is Gina Newnham and a er one of her sessions I asked what she liked about working on my garden, and she replied: “I enjoy gardening and the process of planting, if you get the planting and layout right, you can turn a piece of land into a beautiful garden. When Lucie asked me to help her, I wasn’t worried even after seeing the garden with brambles. I was like ‘let’s get on’. And seeing it changed has been exciting. I now have lovely friendships with you and Lucie. Also knowing what we grow will be used in the community is amazing.” Gardening is the most popular hobby in the UK. e only money I remember sending on the project (probably less than £30) 1. LOCAL GARDEN PROJECT by local resident Ivor Lucie Mann’s entry was The Waterside Food Project which gives just in date food from Supermarkets that would have otherwise been wasted to people in the community who would have gone hungry. e Healthy Haven Garden is a formal garden in the grounds of a local GP surgery which patients can enjoy while waiting for their appointments. It struck me at the time that my project was the least well organised and the least public spirited. But luckily for me who came second and third was never announced. e winner was Lucie Mann’s project, but a er the results were announced she o ered to organise help for me with my gardening. I don’t know where the idea of using Ivor’s garden before Ivor’s garden after competition for local businesses, organised by the Hythe and Dibden Parish Council it was called, Hythe Soup Dragons. Each contestant had to give a pitch to a live audience with the winner receiving £5 from each member of the audience’s entrance fee. Thanks go to their committee for enabling Minstead Trust to take part in this way. On the Sunday, Emma, supported by her Mum, Dad and Nan, honed her sales skills, developing her patter and also having the important job of collecting the money and giving change. Lots of programmes were sold and they were extremely successful and sold out of their allocation of programmes. Other sta from the Trust also helped out selling programmes at di erent times. Since then the ‘Jinglers’ (as they are a ectionately known) have grown in con dence and now arrange regular visits to local care homes as well as performing at local events throughout the year. e singing group love what they do and have always believed that life is better when you sing, so they o er their time on a voluntary basis and free of charge. Over the past six years the Jingle Ladies have raised in excess of £3,000 to support a number of di erent charity organisations, including Honeypot Children’s Charity, Oakhaven Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support, Ukraine and the Turkey/Syria Earthquake Appeal. is year they will be raising funds for the RNLI at their annual Christmas Concert in Black eld Baptist Church on Saturday 14th December. It is a free event with refreshments and excellent ra e prizes - so it is a date not to be missed! All donations received will go to the local RNLI.
