New for 2025, Tapestry is a family-friendly festival celebrating an inspiring mix of world-class artists and exceptional Southampton talent, from African traditions to Indian classical and contemporary folk music. It is expected to bring in more than 20,000 visitors to the city centre over the two days with its jam packed line-up and impressive headliners. Performances include local artists such as the Salty Sea Dogs – Southampton’s nest sea shanty crew – and renowned Indian vocalist Pooja Angra, who teaches at Art Asia Southampton. ese standout artists appear alongside acclaimed names from across the global music spectrum, including Penguin Café – a genre-defying ensemble featuring musicians from Suede and Gorillaz, performing the world-renowned legacy of Penguin Café Orchestra with its distinctive blend of avant-pop, folk-tinged minimalism, and acoustic electronica. Renowned folk artist Sam Lee – one of the genre’s most celebrated and distinctive voices – will also perform, as will rising star Muireann Bradley, whose country blues ngerpicking is capturing widespread attention. Tapestry is part of Southampton’s Jane Austen 250 celebrations, drawing inspiration from her time living in the city and her passion for folk music. e event also features family-friendly music and dance activities, alongside workshops and creative contributions from local schoolchildren organised by event partner Southampton & Isle of Wight Music. Hosted by Radio 3’s Music Planet presenter Lopa Kothari, this is an event that will leave audiences with unforgettable memories. ere will also be an opportunity to revisit festival favourites as BBC Radio 3 will record artists’ performances at Tapestry for broadcast on its Music Planet programme in August. More information can be found at: tapestryfestival.co.uk/ Salty Sea Dogs Hearing about the History of Furzey Gardens, at the Hythe Wives Club On Friday the 16th May, Ian, Julia and Malcolm – volunteers from Minstead Trust were pleased to go along and give their talk on the History of Furzey Gardens of Minstead Trust local learning disability charity to the Hythe Wives Club, at St Andrew’s Dibden Purlieu. On the day, the Trust volunteers also brought along plants and Jams and Chutneys for sale, proving popular with the members of the group, with many going home with a new plant or jar of jam to enjoy. e Jams and Chutneys are made at Minstead Lodge home of the Real Jam and Chutney Company, a social enterprise of Minstead Trust. Ian opened the talk with a bit about the history of Minstead village. e talk also covered information that is both historically and horticulturally interesting and varied with slides and photos. Community talks such as these help raise awareness of the Furzey Gardens and Minstead Trust, as well as being informative and engaging for a group or society’s social calendar. Minstead Trust is very grateful to be invited along to talk to local groups and were delighted to be invited to talk to the Hythe Wives Club. Thirty Years with the Hampshire Constabulary Totton South u3a normally meets at Colbury Memorial Hall on the 4th Friday afternoon of the month, doors open 1.30pm. e next meeting will be on Friday 18th July their speaker will give an entertaining talk titled ‘ irty Years with the Hampshire Constabulary’ based on her experience working in our Police Force. Veterans Coffee Club e Waterside Veterans Co ee Club is held on the 3rd Saturday of every month from 10am at Fawley Royal British Legion, Exbury Road, Black eld, SO45 1XD, with their next meeting scheduled for Saturday 19th July. All veterans, serving personnel, their families and dependents are invited to attend and enjoy the usually good humour, refreshments and occasional visiting guests.
