It involves speci c numbers of components, speci c positions and speci c numbers of di erent materials (branches, owers etc.) Modern day Western oral arrangements probably evolved along these lines as the beauty of diverse education has expanded to involve multinational cultures and ‘Japanese Masters’ able to travel freely. We have vertical arrangements, which tend to be in trough shaped containers, which express mass and line - mass being the heavier base of the arrangement and line being the vertical arrangement of tall stemmed owers. is is a similar principle in Japanese oral arrangements. It shows the beauty of nature, the vertical owers are minimal to be able to appreciate each one. Other styles of arrangements, e.g. Crescent or (using tall vases) simple vertical or horizontal designs are similar to certain Japanese style arrangements. Branches - rigid or exible - are used to create space and movement to draw the eye towards a few beautiful owers. e owers might actually support the branches in their precise position and may be used to show the grace and beauty of the branches. O en the plant material itself is the mechanics of the arrangement in tall slim vases; sometimes a Kenzan (pin holder) is used in a shallow container to position the plant material. Plant material that branches out of the arrangement Vertical arrangement must have another piece heading towards it, to bring the eye back to the arrangement. With an abundance of roses and other owers, plus the wet winter allowing plenty of greenery, why not have a go! Next Meetings: No meeting in August.
