Following a good Spring Show in East Boldre Village Hall in March, the April meeting was a well attended talk “Designing and Planting a Small Garden” given by Andy McIndoe. As the speaker is an internationally recognised garden consultant, designer and garden writer, his talk was beautifully illustrated and informative with tips as to how to make the most of space in the garden with particular attention to aspect, a ecting light and shade and the right choice of plants to make maximum year round impact and longevity. May meetings consisted of two visits and a very successful plant sale in the East Boldre School Fields Hall, with attendees also enjoying tea and cakes. Later in the month, members visited Copthorne Nursery in Fawley. ey were welcomed by Mandy Leigh, the nursery manager, who talked about the background and the operation of the enterprise with obvious enthusiasm and commitment over many years. It was a revelation to hear the story of the 11 acre site, with meaningful activities. It was quite a revelation to see the range and quality of the plants, all in tip-top condition and reasonably priced available to purchase online or on the open days from the nursery. In May, an informative talk on Mediterranean Gardening at Home and Abroad was given by Ben Turner. e speaker recalled his experience of working at Wisley, Tresco on the Isles of Scilly and in South Africa and clari ed the ve recognised Mediterranean Climate Zones or Biomes in California, Mexico, Chile, the Western Cape of South Africa, New Zealand and Western Australia. Lying between latitudes 30 and 40 degrees the climate conditions of cool, wet winters and long, hot summers have led to the evolution of plants particularly adapted to such conditions, especially drought. Using his excellent photos, he identi ed the particular features of plants which have enabled them to survive in these environments. ese could be as bulbs corms, cacti, succulents, annuals, or plants with silver leaves or thin, waxy leaves and which all prefer high light levels and well draining soil. ese are clues as to how and which plants could thrive in a UK garden. He suggested places to see examples of Mediterranean style planting in the UK such as Abbotsbury, Dorset, e Eden Project, Tresco, Kew, Hyde Hall, Essex e Botanic Garden of Wales and Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. e Summer programme will include members only garden visits and a garden party, a plant stall at Beaulieu Fete and Topical Tips. e Autumn Show scheduled for 6th September in East Boldre Village Hall has been cancelled due to the planned refurbishment of the Hall in the Autumn.
