Since joining in 1989, Brenda has had several roles on the Committee, but has been the Collection Box Secretary for the last 15 years. is role takes her to the many businesses, cafes, pubs and o ces that have RNLI collection boxes, around the Waterside and beyond. is includes collections from the cruise ships. Another role Brenda has been well- known for is her tea stall duties at the many RNLI events over the years. However, having celebrated a big birthday this year, she has recently taken a well-deserved step back. Brenda now concentrates on the collection boxes and Betty’s 5p Pots and has no intention of putting her feet up anytime soon. The RNLI has acknowledged Brenda’s commitment and long service over the years by awarding her with the RNLI Silver Badge and more recently the RNLI Gold Badge, which she was awarded at the Barbican in London a couple of years ago. Congratulations, Brenda, and may you continue the good work for many years to come. Brenda Spearing CELEBRATING COATES runs from October through to March next year is now out, so pick up a copy from e Herald o ce and other locations across the Waterside. e Coates Centre, set in the beautiful grounds of the Hospice, celebrated its h anniversary on 8th October with a gathering of Centre clients, Trustees, volunteers and sta in the ‘Hub’. e Centre which has welcomed 20,000 visitors through its doors since opening in October 2014 provides a service for the communities across the New Forest, Waterside and Totton areas whose lives have been impacted by illness. ere’s no need for a referral or be known to Oakhaven, visitors can drop in anytime during opening hours for support, along with their family and friends, whether they are bereaved, have been diagnosed with or are caring for someone with a long term illness. Trained volunteers provide a friendly welcome along with a cuppa and slice of cake. ere are peer support groups, wellbeing and social activities, or visitors can just simply sit and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. e Coates Centre is open Monday-Friday, 9am until 5pm.
