It is a disease of the brain and not a natural part of ageing. It is not just about losing your memory; it also affects cognitive skills such as learning, problem solving and communicating. Cognitive Stimulation erapy has been shown to reduce loneliness, increase thinking and language skills and improve quality of life. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance (2006) recommends that people with mild to moderate dementia should be given the opportunity to take part in a Cognitive Stimulation erapy programme. Key points: • Provides mental stimulation so that people can create new connections. • Reminiscence is used to allow the person to reconnect with their identity. • Encourages new thoughts, ideas, and associations so that people can experience learning again. • Can help to improve mood and self- con dence. What is it? Memoryworks o ers a vital early stage support with their structured programme of group activities and discussions. eir aim is to keep people’s minds active and engaged. Each group meets for one hour once a week for a period of 14 weeks. ere is a maximum number of 8 participants along with two facilitators. What about the carers? Carers are invited to have tea/co ee whilst their loved one attends the session. Providing an opportunity to talk to people who are experiencing similar issues. Health professionals are invited to talk informally based on the carers needs. Where? ey are starting a new group in Totton’s Three Score Club on Wednesday mornings in January. They also have groups in the Coates Centre in Lymington with groups launching in New Milton and Fordingbridge later in the year. Activities are planned throughout the year. • 5th January – Chair Exercise – some gentle activity to get your body tter. • 2nd February – Folk Active – folk dancing and live music. We recognise that it can sometimes be di cult to know who to contact or where to begin, so we o er a wide range of advice and support from our dedicated local Advice Line on: 0800 804 8601 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday (the call may not be free from mobiles) or call: 023 8033 6172 for landline rates . Your call will be answered by a member of the Hampshire-based, friendly and knowledgeable team from the Environment Centre. If you are aware of a family or individual who is struggling to keep warm and well then contact the team. How we can help e phone advice line is open to all Hampshire residents. Some services have eligibility criteria and the advisors will be able to talk through the best possible solution for each caller. Services include: • Assistance to switch your energy provider or tari to help you save money on your fuel bills. • Signposting and referrals to other organisations, such as: bene ts and debt advice and safe and well visits by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. • Eligibility check for the Warm Home Discount and local energy e ciency schemes. • Home visits from our Advisors o ering advice and practical support. • Support with temporary heating measures if you are without heating. • Help to access funding, where available, for boiler repairs and replacements. Delivered through trusted ‘Buy With Con dence’ contractors. If you live in a rural area of Hampshire we have additional resources to help.
