Various shapes of foliage with Fatsia leaves around the base, Aspidistra leaves folded in half and added to the design, then variegated lilac snapdragons, yellow and pink Germinis. All inspired by her visit to Keukenhof Gardens in Holland. Melanie’s next arrangement would not have looked out of place in a church it was beautiful in a horizontal shape, with cream Calla Lillies intertwined with silver birch, willow and various twigs laid across her dish, also Star of Bethlehem and an assortment of foliage. Melanie’s last arrangement was in a red ceramic round in shape container with a spiral made up of a Medelino stick, assorted foliage added and 2 plaited palms which were wired into the shape of a heart. Red Amaranthus and red Naomi scented Roses added along with Germinis, this would be a lovely arrangement for Hythe Flower Club had a very entertaining and informative evening with Melanie Smith’s ower arranging and talk entitled ‘Flowers bring Smiles’ on ursday 8th September at Dibden Parish Hall, Hythe. Melanie worked in a bank and then in an insurance o ce when she realised this was not what she wanted to do and decided to have a change in career, when Melanie took up training as a Florist in 2008 and later as an Area Demonstrator. It was lovely to see Melanie a er waiting 2 years as she was originally booked in 2020, well worth the wait Melanie! e rst arrangement started o as a television box from the lo , now covered in green felt with decorative buttons and ribbons wired around the box. e shape was changed into a handbag by ra a handles. Oasis foam placed inside with Ivy, Asparagus ferns and various shapes of foliage followed by Aqua Roses in Pink, Amaranthus and Germinis in di erent shades of pink. e overall e ect was lovely shades of pink and green. e next arrangement was an umbrella shape made of covered wire for a hand tied arrangement. e wires were intertwined like a spiders web and the ends were covered with little yellow pom poms. Very ne ferns were threaded through the framework along with other foliage and then toned yellow and orange chrysanthemums and orange Germinis. e arrangement was then tied around with wire and an Aspidistra leaf to secure. e fabulous nishing touch was some bees hand made by Melanie with Crespidia seed heads – 2 pinned together for the head and body with a pearl pin, eyes drawn in with a pen and then placed in the arrangement, there were several of these. We were so intrigued Melanie passed one set around Valentine’s Day! Melanie’s arrangements were very colourful and she reminisced about her visit to Almera, for the Floriade Horticultural Exhibition in Holland which is held every 10 years and well worth a visit. Melanie has travelled all over England as well for Flower Shows and arranging, she also teaches in Bournemouth on a regular basis.
