Members enjoy a friendly, social atmosphere at the monthly meetings. Every meeting includes a ra e. ere are lm nights, quizzes, speakers on various topics and club drive days. Some members have other makes of classic vehicles such as Bedford, Ford, Land Rover, Mercedes, M.G., Morris, Riley, Triumph and Volkswagen enabling the club to expand the range of vehicle manufacturers to complement their A30/35s and other Austin models. Club News On ursday, 10th November, the group was treated to an interesting talk by David Hutchings who is the chairman of the Southampton and District Transport Heritage Trust (S&DTHT). e Trust was founded in 2001. It was based upon an established group formed in 1976 who joined with other members from a similar group started the same year. e Trust is associated with around 20 vehicles that relate to the history of transport in and around Southampton. e S&DTHT is part of the Working Omnibus Museum Project Ltd which is a registered charity. e oldest vehicle in the collection is a Guy Arab open top bus. is bus is notably famous with its connection with the 1976 Southampton FA Cup win as it was used to carry the winning team around the city. e youngest in the collection includes a Leyland Olympian from 1987 and a Dennis Dart from 1995. David brought in items from early post war buses for the group to see and discuss their purpose. e items included a roller operated, printed blind showing destination road names including the Dell. Other items were a metal request stop sign, a leather conductor’s cash bag, a metal cash box, a push once button, a large caution driver under instruction sign and rolls of unused tickets. e club members thoroughly enjoyed the talk taking them through Southampton’s public transport history. e photo is of an A.E.C Regent which has just crossed the Itchen Bridge to Woolston circa 1978. e Itchen Bridge was opened for public use in June 1977. e photo was taken by David Orchard and is part of the S&DTHT Collection. e club owns Austin Motor Spares Service Ltd which holds, in stock, a large quantity of highly valued items to support customers’ needs. New, used and reconditioned parts are sold by Robert and Rick Prinn who are able to o er comprehensive advice and help. The next scheduled meeting is on 8th December and will be a Quiz Night with mince pies. Meetings take place on the second ursday of each month, starting 7.30pm, at Netley Marsh Community Hall, Woodlands Rd, SO40 7GH. Do go along and meet them.
