As our last remaining predator, they are quite rare and hard to see in the wild, unless it is snowy, when the contrast of golden fur on white snow makes them a little easier to spot. If you have recently seen one – have you been fortunate enough to see the famous fox mouse pounce? ere are few wildlife moments more exhilarating than seeing a fox, so ly padding through the snow, then suddenly, completely engaged, ears twitching, squat and spring into the air, then dive, head and paws rst, snow ying everywhere, to the ground - in hot pursuit of a poor mouse. ese charming foxes are akin to the black-backed jackals we see on our safaris in southern Africa. ey too have an equally entertaining and delightfully playful ‘mouse pounce’. Just replace the cold, snowy forest with hot, dusty savannah and you have the scene. Keep a look out for foxes when you are next in the forest – you might be lucky enough to see the mouse pounce.
