You may remember back in June we published a story about 3 brothers ‘ e Ambrose Buoys’ from Lymington who were planning to take on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in December, in a bid to beat their Father Hugo’s time and raise money for the conservation charity Tusk. Brothers Louis, Felix and Finn set o on 12th December in their boat ‘Ambrosia’ to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic from La Gomera to Antigua. ey completed their challenge in just 36 days, 2 hours and 41 minutes, arriving in Antigua on Tuesday 17th January. Beating their Father’s time of 56 days when he took part in the challenge in 2003 and winning themselves the £5 bet they’d made against him! A er being greeted back onshore by their family and friends the Ambrose Buoys were interviewed by the Atlantic Challenges team, when asked how they were feeling they commented: “We’re pretty delighted; it’s quite overwhelming, it’s quite weird to see people!” During the interview the bet with their Father was mentioned and Hugo stepped forward to pay up his debt handing over a £5 note! As well as trumping their Father’s time, the Ambrose Buoys have also managed to raise over £26,000 for Tusk, which supports progressive conservation action across Africa, tackling poaching, habitat loss and human-wildlife con ict. During the Christmas Week, the Mummers were out and about performing the East Boldre Mummers Play in the pubs and hotels of the New Forest where they managed to perform 42 times in 38 di erent venues. Last year was very special for the Mummers as it was the rst time they were able to complete a proper tour since 2019 following the pandemic and also as they were collecting in memory of a former leading member of the New Forest Mummers, Pete Dyer, who sadly passed away in May 2022 follow a battle with dementia. “We love keeping this medieval tradition alive in the New Forest,” said Mummer, Keith Petty. “The reaction we get is always so welcoming and we must say a huge thank you to all the landlords across the New Forest who allowed us to perform and their very generous patrons who helped us raise this fantastic amount. This was the 55th year for the New Forest Mummers and we are always on the lookout for members to join the group to help us keep going for many more years to come!” Georgi Welch, the Regional Fundraising O cer for Alzheimer’s Research UK said: “Thank you so much to The New Forest Mummers for their incredible support. At Alzheimer’s Research UK we understand how difficult times are for so many people and we are very grateful to everyone who contributed to this fantastic donation. Too many of us have experienced the devastation of dementia, but thanks to the efforts of our incredible supporters, we’re funding research that is bringing lifechanging treatments ever closer for people living with the condition. Every penny raised helps bring about a world free from the fear, harm and heartbreak of dementia.” For more information on the Mummers or even to join them next year please contact Keith Petty on: 023 8086 9625 or email: familypetty@btinternet.com. Waterside Heritage was given a 99 year lease of the former Hythe Railway Station in Dominy Close by the New Forest District Council and a er major refurbishment the building was opened as e Waterside Heritage Centre in 2002. It comprises a study and library area, space for exhibitions, archive storage and a small kitchen and WC. e Chairman of Waterside Heritage from its very beginning 27 years ago, Graham Parkes, has sadly passed away. Waterside Heritage has therefore not only lost an incredible fount of knowledge about the local area but also someone who virtually ran Waterside Heritage and its Heritage Centre single handed. e Executive Committee of Waterside Heritage acknowledge that no single volunteer could possibly cover the range of activities that Graham did. ey are therefore urgently seeking volunteers, interested in local history, who could share the tasks between them. Volunteers undertake a wide variety of activities from sorting, archiving and indexing, to undertaking research, scanning, printing and creating exhibition material. Other volunteers are needed to help with the maintenance of the building and grounds. If anyone would like to discuss the options available and receive reassurance about the commitment, please contact the Secretary, Dr Mike Gibson via email: mikegibson47@btinternet.com or call: 023 8087 9530.
